What can we learn from the RFK Jr. Campaign? Came across this article in Politico (linked below) which talks about how RFK Jr has raised an eye popping $28M and is activating voters that haven’t participated in our democracy in years. This quote stood out “I feel like the purity and intention is really what drew me to him.” As the fractional, volunteer CMO at We Vote my posts are strictly nonpartisan. This is not an endorsement (and for the record, I do not see myself personally supporting RFK Jr). But given WeVote’s core mission is to expand the electorate and reach those who haven’t been voting, I can appreciate that this campaign is having some impact. My bigger observation applies not to politics, but to #marketers. Two well established, incumbent brands who have each spent hundreds of millions in media to cement their respective customer relationships (so to speak). And yet here comes a challenger brand, and begins pulling 10-20% market share from the TAM, and perhaps even expands it. Why? Goes back to the combination of audacity and authenticity. The power of taking risks (to use the more poetic JFK quote). Since politics is a zero-sum game (there can only be one “winner”), this is perhaps more Don Quixotic than ultimately a successful strategy. But for marketers overseeing established brands - comforted and reinforced by their robust number of loyal customers - challenger brands, powered by “purity and intention” in their messaging and mission can sneak up and crash the party. https://lnkd.in/ehEFCKVX
