One of the key outcomes of COP29 was the ten-year extension of the Gender and Climate Change Lima Work Program, marking an important step forward in integrating gender equality with climate action globally. Mwanahamisi was a key advocate for this plan, and she believes that this framework is not only a victory for women but also a significant milestone in advancing global climate action toward fairness and justice. She urged the international community to redefine the role of women in climate action, viewing them as a core force rather than simply as beneficiaries. She stated that true climate justice must place the needs and contributions of women at the heart of action; otherwise, no policy will achieve its intended outcomes. read more: https://reurl.cc/vp5yol Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) COP29 Azerbaijan 聯合國 UN Climate Change UN Environment Programme Mwanahamisi Singano Wiebke Bender Narmin Huseynova Khuraman Zeynalova Simon Stiell Mukhtar Babayev Dr Jemimah Njuki Razan Al Mubarak Liliam Chagas Young Hee L. Global climate action takes a step forward at #COP29! 🌍 In Baku, the EU helped secure significant achievements, including: ✔️ A new climate finance target of $300 billion per year by 2035, with a broader base of contributors. ✔️ Finalising rules for carbon markets under Article 6 to ensure transparency and environmental integrity. ✔️ Announcing a 1.5°C-aligned Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for next year, setting an ambitious example for others to follow. ✔️ Launching a Methane Abatement Partnership Roadmap and driving progress on gender equality in climate action. The EU also unveiled its first-ever Biennial Transparency Report, underscoring its leadership in accountability and climate progress. With the EU’s emissions down by 37% since 1990, we’re on track for our 2030 and 2050 targets, but global ambition must rise to keep 1.5°C alive. A gender-responsive #JustTransition addresses the shift to sustainable, low-carbon economies by ensuring that the needs, rights, and contributions of women and marginalized groups are integral to climate policy. This approach means more than equal job opportunities—it considers the disproportionate impact climate change has on women, who are often responsible for unpaid care work and face barriers to jobs in the green economy. COP28's Gender-Responsive Just Transitions & Climate Action Partnership focused on policy frameworks that support gender equality through better data, financing, and skills training. This partnership emphasized empowering women in climate leadership and addressing the social disparities in transitioning economies. For #COP29 to be effective, negotiations must build on the momentum from COP28, balancing attention to gender considerations with a focus on actionable progress. #FairTransitionForAll #COP29Azerbaijan Green Economy Coalition

Such an important topic in the midst of #U20 and #COP29. We need more work on the gender and climate action nexus.

🌍🌱 Join the Gender-Just Transition for a Sustainable Future! 🌱🌍 We are excited to amplify the launch of SHE Changes Climate’s new Gender-Just Transition Campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the critical role of women in climate action and advocating for a fair, inclusive transition to a sustainable future. #WEEmpower is happy to support our dissemination partner, SHE Changes Climate in this new program emphasizing the importance of female presence in the climate space. A sustainable future demands bold inclusivity. As we transition to a green economy, women—especially those in vulnerable sectors—must no longer be left behind. For too long, climate policies and economic shifts have excluded women’s voices, overlooking their unique challenges, strengths, and knowledge, and missing out on transformative opportunities. A gender-responsive just transition isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s critical for resilient economies and thriving communities. By advancing gender-responsiveness in climate action and fostering equitable participation in governance, countries will not only improve the inclusivity and effectiveness of national strategies, but also help build more resilient, equitable, and healthier societies, better equipped to confront the climate crisis. #COP29 holds the power to build a future that works for all of us. Let’s keep pushing for a #FairTransitionForAll. #SHEChangesClimate

“We have done all the negotiations. Now we need real actions to address the climate emergency." – Gbemisola Titilope Akosa The latest text on the new climate finance goal is alarmingly insufficient. Proposed funding falls far short of climate needs. It leans on loans and private investments which have consistently failed to deliver to those most in need. It does not address human rights and gender equality. Ultimately, it does not show care for the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations. We refuse to accept this. As #COP29 comes to a close, we urgently call on the UK Government to show that they are serious about prioritising women and girls in the climate crisis. They must: 🔸 Prioritise a feminist response to the climate crisis 🔸 Push for a new global goal of at least $1 trillion in public climate finance 🔸 Ensure that any climate finance must be “new and additional”, not from existing aid budgets. A #JustTransition must work for everyone—yet gender equity in climate finance, energy access, and decision-making is still gridlocked at #COP29. Parties must act decisively to deliver an inclusive and equitable work programme on gender that accelerates a #FairTransitionForAll

The #IPCC identifies intersectionality as a “fundamental question” for adaptation to climate change. Indeed, it is difficult to argue against the idea that we should centre the most vulnerable people in our efforts to manage climate risks and that, often, the most vulnerable people are those who face intersecting forms of discrimination. An intersectional approach helps us to move towards more nuanced analysis of the power structures and systemic barriers that undermine resilience and inhibit people’s opportunities to participate in climate action. As the #COP29 negotiations kick off in Baku, there is an opportunity to incorporate #intersectionality in in the Lima work programme, the Gender Action Plan, and other key decisions. My thoughts on why this matters for climate justice: https://lnkd.in/gcdMDP2M

As we approach the closing of the gender negotiations at #COP29, check out this brilliant piece on the importance of #intersectionality for #ClimateAction No step backwards!

We need to do better
Another year, another COP, and yet again, we are confronted with the glaring imbalance in women’s representation on climate decision-making fora. 🖼️Exhibit A: 8 women representing 51% of the population, alongside 69 men representing 49%. This statistic is not just a number—it’s a stark reminder of the work that remains to be done. At #SHEChangesClimate, we continue to push the boundaries, advocating for true representation. Because real gender parity isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about building a foundation for solutions that are just, inclusive, and impactful for all. And as the Enhanced Lima Work Programme on Gender and its Gender Action Plan come up for review this year, we’re reminded once again that true progress cannot be achieved without meaningful participation from women at all levels of decision-making. #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan

The petro-patriarchy is alive and well at COP29. A rapid review of the attendance list shows a 60-40 split men-women. Only 35% of country representatives at COP29 are women. Inequitable participation persists at COP, as it has for the past 3 decades. COP29 has also seen attempts by to derail and slow the negotiations on gender, including by blocking decades-old agreed language around "gender" vs. "sex". We've seen this push-back on gender language accross multiple UN fora this year, and the UN climate negotiations are no exception. A new Gender Action Plan is supposed to be developed under the UNFCCC by COP30 in Brazil next year, but without progress over the coming days at COP29, this will be hard to accomplish. Women's rights and the rights of groups experiencing multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination are not optional. They are central for making meaningful progress on climate action at COP29. Many thanks to my colleagues Kim van Daalen, PhD, Bianca Castillo, Sophie Gepp and Laura Jung for this rapid analysis. A more robust breakdown will follow post-COP.
