The Rise of AI: Are your data privacy systems future fit? Rapid technological advancements, specifically in AI, have had a transformative impact on business operations on a global scale. AI’s capabilities to automate tasks, secure data, and analyse large datasets offer numerous benefits, but at the same time introduce significant data privacy challenges. In South Africa, while AI is not comprehensively regulated, the Protection of Personal Information Act imposes restrictions on data processing through automated means. Organisations must ensure AI systems comply with POPI to avoid legal repercussions, necessitating thorough impact assessments and potential prior authorisation from the Information Regulator. Adopting robust compliance measures is crucial for leveraging AI’s potential while minimising regulatory risks. The EU AI Act, the first comprehensive AI regulation that aims to govern the risks of AI systems and protect fundamental rights of EU citizens, comes into force on 1 August 2024. The fact Australia has not rushed into regulating AI has given us a rare advantage. In Australia there are no specific laws regarding AI. It's important to remember the use or deployment of AI may breach other regulations already in place: Consumer protection WHS, Privacy, Cyber and Duty of Care and Diligence. As the ambition to do more with AI evolves your governance and risk management has to be enhanced alongside to not only ensure you execute AI safely and responsibly but also to make sure you can do it at speed. To assist organisations AI Access has developed an operations readiness framework ensuring clarity of requirements and discipline along the AI lifecycle: planning and design, model building and interpretation, verification and validation to operations performance monitoring. EU context: The EU AI Act is a result of extensive negotiation, aimed at laying down a harmonised legal framework "for the development, the placing on the market, the putting into service and the use of artificial intelligence systems" in the EU. Spanning 180 recitals and 113 Articles, the new law takes a risk-based approach to regulating the entire lifecycle of different types of AI systems. Non-compliance with the EU AI Act will be met with a maximum financial penalty of up to EUR 35 million or 7 percent of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher Learn more about the EU AI act: https://lnkd.in/gztU834e #AIGovernance #AIstrategy #AIriskmanagement
