It is my pleasure to share my new role as the founding director of the non-profit GC.OS, the German Center for Open Source AI Software Resarch. It has a two-fold mission: 1. The international ecosystem of open source software components is an infrastructure cornerstone of - and precondition for - innovation in the AI space. Similar to how no one in their right mind would consider privatizing all of a country's streets, hospitals, or sewage treatment facilities, this critical base infrastructure for the next century needs to be managed sustainably under shared, democratic governance. The institute will hence aim to create, support and promote open source AI software that is also openly governed by its developers and users. Open source projects and contributors, anywhere on the globe, sharing this vision, are encouraged to get in touch with us for shaping our initial strategy and joining kick-off projects. We will, of course, also reach out actively. 2. GC.OS is the first German non-profit institute with a dedicated focus on open AI software. Despite the country's industrial strength, and that of the Baden-Württemberg region in particular, where the institute is physically located, the German AI software landscape is disintegrated. Access to cutting-edge technologies is biased towards privileged locations or individuals, and piecemeal approaches prevail. Similar biases exist globally, with systemic difficulties of access to know-how or resources except in certain networks or regions. Open source, together with its integrative, virtualized operational practices, can be a powerful driver to integrate ecosystems for innovation, and to disseminate knowledge widely and efficiently. In the first phase, we aim to use our physical presence in the former corporate headquarters of the Schlecker group (pictured) to connect and kickstart AI software activities in the region. If you are in travel distance to the BW region, join us at the 11th Economic Forum Ehingen on Sep 24 https://lnkd.in/e8eH2Gbk Over the next months, we will disseminate further, concrete opportunities for users and developers of open source - do not hestitate to get in touch, and follow us on LinkedIn. #opensource #ai #datascience #gcos #sktime

We're thrilled to announce that Google.org has joined our AI for Changemakers program as the main sponsor! Being backed by such a tech giant gives us the motivation and boosts our belief that what we're doing truly matters! Just like how Google helps you find exactly what you're looking for, Google.org is helping nonprofits discover the transformative power of AI. And the results are simply mind-blowing: 📊 AI can help nonprofits achieve their goals 3x faster 💡 With only half the usual resources But here's the catch - many nonprofits are still struggling to 'search' for the right AI solutions. That's where we come in! Rowan Barnett, Director of Google.org for Europe, Middle East & Africa, puts it perfectly: "Our data shows that AI can help nonprofit organisations achieve their goals three times faster and with half the usual resources. However, many lack the tech expertise and skills to unlock this potential. Tech to the Rescue is doing exceptional work to help bridge this divide. We're thrilled to be continuing our support through the AI for Changemakers program, and help more nonprofits build transformative solutions and scale their social impact with AI." With Google on board, we're not just 'Feeling Lucky' - we're feeling unstoppable! 💪 Together, we're indexing a world of AI possibilities for nonprofits. No 404 errors here - just pure innovation and impact. Ready to upgrade your nonprofit's impact? Join our AI for Changemakers program today! #TechForGood #AIForChangemakers

#DataBytes Do you know how many hours of mentorship are required by open-source contributors? And how many hours are actually being provided? Contributors require mentorship to understand the project’s purpose, developing skills, and getting the support needed to make meaningful contributions. At Code for GovTech, we have released the DPG State of the Community Report 2024, which provides a holistic overview of the current state of community-building efforts across DPGs, offering insights into both organizational and developer perspectives. Building strong communities around DPGs begins with understanding the gaps in mentorship, and the report explores how organizations and contributors are navigating this. Curious to learn more? Access the full report and share your thoughts here 👉https://lnkd.in/gpMkcPHZ Code for GovTech (C4GT) aims to catalyze and grow the world’s first open-source community of contributors, mentors, and organizations around Digital Public Goods (DPG) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has announced the launch of a new program called Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI, aimed at supporting nonprofits developing technology leveraging generative AI. With $20 million in grants, the program will initially include 21 nonprofits, including Quill.org and the World Bank. Participating nonprofits will receive funding as well as access to technical training, workshops, mentors, and guidance from an "AI coach" during the six-month accelerator program. Additionally, teams of Google employees will work with selected nonprofits full-time for up to six months through Google.org's fellowship program. Among the nonprofits selected are Tarjimly, focusing on using AI to translate languages for refugees, Benefits Data Trust, creating AI assistants to support caseworkers, and mRelief, developing a tool to streamline the U.S. SNAP benefits application process. Generative AI has the potential to enhance productivity, creativity, and effectiveness for social impact teams, according to Annie Lewin, director of global advocacy at Google.org. A Google.org survey found that while many nonprofits see the potential of generative AI, significant barriers remain, including lack of tools, awareness, training, and funding. Despite these challenges, there is a growing interest in nonprofit AI-focused startups. Fast Forward, a nonprofit accelerator, reported a significant number of AI-focused applicants for its latest class, while organizations like AlgorithmWatch, JoyEducation, and Earth05 are dedicated to ethical approaches to AI. #StartupNewsBangladesh #Google #GenerativeAI #TechStartup
