Florida's open transfer policy lets student-athletes switch schools if there's space, a unique flexibility compared to other states. NIL rules prevent schools from using this to attract athletes with payments. Been wondering how the NCAA transfer portal impacts student-athletes' development? While it offers freedom and opportunities, it also poses significant challenges. With nearly half of the athletes still undecided after entering the portal, many find themselves in academic and athletic limbo. This uncertainty can hinder the growth of crucial life skills like resilience and perseverance. I discuss more about the potential long-term effects of the transfer portal and how we can better support our student-athletes. What are your thoughts on how the transfer portal has been going for the student athletes? #NCAA #StudentAthletes #TransferPortal #collegefootball #NIL #AthleteDevelopment #Resilience Joseph A. In the mid-2000s I was the Lead of Performance for the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club, and I was searching for a way to better understand the relationship between our athlete's performance measures off the ice with their performance measures on the ice. Until then, we made the leap of faith assumption that an athlete with a high aerobic and anaerobic capacity would carry that onto the ice. We believed that if they were more powerful and explosive off the ice, they would transition onto the ice. We also had biased viewpoints on what a "fast" skater was subjectively. Quick example, PK Subban was considered to be a fast skater, but when we tested him, his skating speed was average, but his reaction time was off the charts. His ability to react and move made him look faster than he was in a simple linear speed test. And we learned so much more during those few years near the end of my time with the team. Innovation has always been a part of who I am. I want to know the "why". Why is this athlete faster, stronger, always getting injured, or never getting injured? #StudentAthlete? Anyone else think with the #NCAA's embrace / accommodation of becoming #MinorLeagueSports via #NIL (#NameImageLikeness) paychecks, that it's just time to bury the ideal of the #StudentAthlete and end #Scholarship #CollegeSports in favor of #ClubSports? As someone whose career #Journalism work started at 17 at the #UniversityOfIllinois writing about #Football, #Basketball, #TrackAndField, #Fencing, #Swimming, #Wrestling and #Gymnastics, I've drank the Kool-Aid for more than a half century re: the idealism of representing your #Country, your #School, your #State and your #Community. Decline of #CollegeSports -- documented herein by #JesseDougherty, as well as by 100s of other #Journalists -- into #SportsMarket wheeling and dealing is just a shame. It's time to "spin-off" College Sports into an #NCAA 2nd tier branded #MinorLeague to the #NBA, #NFL and more, and not even pretend about "going to class," and "getting a degree."

Can everyone afford to play tennis? There is almost 3,200 schools in NSW and 2,200 are public...when compared to the independent school networks, public school tennis offerings can vary significantly, often reliant on teachers taking on multiple roles to create sporting opportunities for their students. This year we're investing (both financially and in staff support) to support the public school networks with the aim of making tennis competition and programming accessible for all. Following our successful Coloured Ball Competition pilot with the Primary School Sports Association (PSSA) in 2023, we're working with additional public school zones this year to create more opportunities for students. Collaboration between our national and state sporting body, local clubs and coaches and finally the school sport representatives and teachers has been key in being able to provide high quality, affordable tennis competition experiences for all. As an insight, the competition below had approximately 170 players over 10 weeks, the cost was just $6/week for a child to play and it raised almost $10,000 revenue for the local tennis club in off-peak time. The income means the local club can pay to support the local PSSA to deliver the competition, taking some of the burden off local teachers and making these competitions sustainable, more of these to come in 2024!
