We asked 11,000 teachers about reasons for teacher absence. This is a question we ask every year and this allows us to track changes over time… here’s what we found out 👇 🔻This year, 13% took days off related to mental health – this is the same as last year, and the figure has stayed around this level since we first asked in 2017. 📊 Around a third of teachers told us they never take a day off – but this is lower than in the years running up to the pandemic (41% in July 2018 and 43% in July 2019). 😷 Respiratory illnesses make up 16% of absence this year, lower than the previous two years (31% February 2022 and 21% July 2023). Taking time off as a teacher can be really difficult – as can covering teachers when they are absent. Our report with Gatsby included some data in the number of schools using long term cover in their schools, you can read more here 👉 bit.ly/3zzovyx #education #teachersurveys #absence #mentalhealth

Urgent Conversation: Child antidepressant prescriptions are nearing a staggering 500,000 per year, marking a chilling surge of 44%. This statistic isn't just a number; it's a poignant reflection of the deep-seated mental health challenges our youngest generation is facing. More worrying is that only 1 in 4 visited a child psychiatrist before they were given the pills. As professionals, caregivers, and advocates, it's our moral imperative to dig deeper, to ask the tough questions, and to mobilize resources to address this crisis head-on. What underlying factors are fueling this dramatic increase? Are we providing adequate support and resources for children grappling with mental health issues? The rise in antidepressant prescriptions among children is not a standalone issue; it's a symptom of a larger societal problem. From mounting academic pressures to the pervasive influence of social media, our children are navigating unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety. And while medication can be a vital tool in managing mental health conditions, it should never be the first or only solution. We must foster open dialogues about mental health, eradicate the stigma surrounding seeking help, and prioritize early intervention and prevention strategies. This means investing in mental health education in schools, educating and supporting parents to understand how to help their children and creating safe spaces where children feel empowered to voice their struggles without fear of judgment. But perhaps most importantly, it means cultivating a culture of compassion and empathy. Our children are not statistics; they are individuals with unique experiences, emotions, and needs. By listening, validating their feelings, and offering unwavering support, we can instill hope and resilience in the face of adversity. What are your thoughts on this? The number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing. And as schools work to increase services for students that need immediate intervention (good!), schools are also trying to grapple with ways to take preventative and proactive approaches to mental health for all students. More advisory time? School assemblies? What can we possibly do to help support student mental health? How about we invest and improve physical education and health opportunities for students? PE and health classes are the perfect vehicle for supporting and enhancing student mental health....for all students!
In what ways can our schools, specifically PE and Health Departments, mitigate the mental burden our students are currently under? https://hubs.li/Q02yQt6P0
