Stay connected with friends, teachers and loved ones for support and guidance Hydrate regularly and wear sunscreen to protect against heat and UV exposure. Practice social distancing and wear masks in crowded places to prevent illness. Stay updated on health advisories and follow local guidelines. We asked 11,000 teachers about reasons for teacher absence. This is a question we ask every year and this allows us to track changes over time… here’s what we found out 👇 🔻This year, 13% took days off related to mental health – this is the same as last year, and the figure has stayed around this level since we first asked in 2017. 📊 Around a third of teachers told us they never take a day off – but this is lower than in the years running up to the pandemic (41% in July 2018 and 43% in July 2019). 😷 Respiratory illnesses make up 16% of absence this year, lower than the previous two years (31% February 2022 and 21% July 2023). Taking time off as a teacher can be really difficult – as can covering teachers when they are absent. Our report with Gatsby included some data in the number of schools using long term cover in their schools, you can read more here 👉 bit.ly/3zzovyx #education #teachersurveys #absence #mentalhealth

Having a clinic set up in schools offers numerous benefits that enhance the overall well-being and academic performance of students. Firstly, it provides immediate access to healthcare, ensuring that minor illnesses and injuries are treated promptly, reducing absenteeism. Secondly, healthy students are more focused and perform better academically, as regular check-ups and early detection of health issues prevent disruptions in learning. Finally, school clinics offer crucial mental health support, helping students manage stress, anxiety, and other psychological challenges, leading to a more positive school experience and better social interactions. #SchoolHealth #StudentWellbeing #HealthySchools #AcademicSuccess #MentalHealthSupport #SchoolClinics #HealthyStudents #EducationAndHealth #StudentHealth #WellbeingInSchools

The number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing. And as schools work to increase services for students that need immediate intervention (good!), schools are also trying to grapple with ways to take preventative and proactive approaches to mental health for all students. More advisory time? School assemblies? What can we possibly do to help support student mental health? How about we invest and improve physical education and health opportunities for students? PE and health classes are the perfect vehicle for supporting and enhancing student mental health....for all students!
In what ways can our schools, specifically PE and Health Departments, mitigate the mental burden our students are currently under? https://hubs.li/Q02yQt6P0

This is a really interesting article and keys into why we created MELVA: Mental Health Education Through Storytelling Intervention. Read it via: https://lnkd.in/eYSzAheF With statutory services in high demand, it is falling to schools to support children in place of trained mental health practitioners. We know this comes with anxieties and challenges, alongside the epidemic of teacher stress and burnout. With MELVA, we wanted to create an impactful intervention that enabled and empowered teachers, whilst delivering elements of the RSHE curriculum. The article outlines the need and the benefits of early intervention and that investment in early interventions (like MELVA) actually save money in the long term and help set children up for fruitful, healthy futures. MELVA is for all children, not just those who are struggling. It focuses on teaching children the skills and understanding they need to keep themselves well, whatever challenges they might face in the future, supporting the development of resilience pathways, positive emotional responses, and relationships. Are you noticing any of these signs in your school-aged child? Persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, or hopelessness that linger for weeks or months could be indicative of depression. Pay attention if they withdraw from social interactions, prefer solitude, or lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Changes in sleep patterns, such as insomnia or hypersomnia, might also signal depression, as can significant shifts in appetite or weight. Keep an eye out for academic struggles, increased absenteeism, or behavioral changes at school, which could indicate difficulty concentrating or performing. If you observe these signs persisting, seeking professional help is essential for your child's well-being. Embrace a holistic approach to education that focuses on developing not only academic knowledge but also essential life skills. https://lnkd.in/gASztPU or email us at: [email protected] #ChildDepression #SignsOfDepression #MentalHealthAwareness #ParentingConcerns #SeekHelp #SupportYourChild #BeAware #ChildrensMentalHealth #EarlyIntervention #HealthyKids

Mental health support is crucial, especially in high-pressure academic environments like IITs. I believe every IIT should have a dedicated team to periodically assess students' mental well-being. This team could identify those struggling with stress or pressure and provide necessary support before it escalates. By collaborating with departments, they can create a proactive approach to help students manage their workload and emotional health, ultimately preventing tragic incidents like suicides. It's time we prioritize mental health as much as academic excellence.
It's heartbreaking to share that a fellow 3rd-year CSE student from our campus has tragically died by suicide. This is the second suicide in one month and the third this year. It's clear that mental health support in our institutions needs urgent attention. Students have protested near the academic building, asking the administration to take responsibility. They're calling for changes to reduce academic pressure, including a review of the attendance policy. It’s said that the student received an F grade due to low attendance, which was affected by medical reasons. I truly hope the administration works quickly to improve mental health support for students and create a healthier environment for everyone.

📢 The Alarming Rise of Eating Disorders Among Students 📰 A recent report reveals that the number of UK university students needing support for eating disorders has more than doubled in the past five years. The pressures of campus life - managing finances, academics, and social life away from home - can be overwhelming and, for some, trigger or worsen eating difficulties. Erin Butler, a university student featured in the article, shared how the demands of university life affected her anorexia: “I think coming to uni, I really wanted to get rid of that part of myself, leave behind the anorexic, sick version of myself and come as a new person.” However, she found herself struggling under the weight of responsibilities, adding, “The mixture of managing my finances, managing my own groceries, and making sure I was able to make classes on time… all of that combined becomes too much, and when you have everything going on in your head as well, it’s really a disaster.” At First Steps ED, we know early intervention is key. Our Eating Disorders in Students Services (EDISS) programme offers flexible, compassionate support for students facing these challenges. Through weekly support groups, one-to-one peer sessions, and staff training, EDISS is dedicated to fostering safe, understanding spaces on campuses where students can discuss their mental health, build resilience, and feel less alone in their journey.
