As I prepare for a presentation at the Aurora Research and Innovation Conference in Brussels (https://rb.gy/jkb5tt), and while reading the Draghi report (https://rb.gy/nsr4lp), the (new) Dutch government simultaneously announces horrendous budget cuts in higher education. How do these align? It’s absurd! Normally, I avoid political commentary on this platform, but this issue cannot be ignored. The Dutch government’s decision not only weakens national prospects but also diminishes our role in European collaboration. At a time when partnerships and the exchange of knowledge are more essential than ever, cutting investment in higher education compromises our ability to innovate and create future opportunities. This is not just a matter of national interest—it’s about ensuring a sustainable, educated future for our children and the next generation, it’s the foundation of shared European progress. We all know, education is a strategic investment, not a cost. These cuts risk undermining the very foundation of our future progress and prosperity. "In 2018, one of Spain’s top-ranked universities, which trains its graduates for careers in everything from neuroscience and biomedicine to government and economics, launched a first-of-its-kind master’s program in a more nascent and explicitly nontraditional field: a degree in degrowth." Degrowth calls for intentionally scaling down overdeveloped economies, focusing instead on citizens’ well-being, ecological sustainability, and providing for basic needs. https://lnkd.in/eHp2xMRZ
What can you do with a degree in degrowth?

A warm thanks for your work ! Here are the T.I.M.E. study results conducted by Armand Burlet--Pailhé, Mattéo Cineux, Henri-Louis Pozzo di Borgo, Raphaël Rigaud, and Flavio Silvestre, a dedicated team from CentraleSupélec. The detailed report is available:https://lnkd.in/euGXFcpr. The T.I.M.E. Project aimed to achieve four key objectives: 1. Understand the impact of #environmental factors on student, researchers mobility decisions in the #engineering education sector; 2. Assess the #carbonfootprint of international mobility within the T.I.M.E. network to support data-driven discussions; 3. Understand the purpose and #benefits of international mobility for students, teachers, and administrators; 4. Evaluate and share the environmental #measures implemented across the T.I.M.E. network to inspire further improvements. To meet these objectives, the team implemented detailed questionnaires targeting #students, #faculty, and #administrators from #TIME Members. They also conducted individual interviews to gather #qualitative insights on the experiences and perspectives related to international #mobility. *** According to the findings, nearly #50%of #students consider #environmental factors when choosing their mobility options, and #38% of #researchers and professors consider environmental factors in their #mobilitydecisions. Additionally, #40% of universities have implemented #environmental #awarenesscampaigns or measures, and #22% of universities have conducted carbon footprint analyses. #France, in regards to international mobility, is quite interesting as completing international mobility is #mandatory to obtain an #engineering degree. But what do students think about it?A large majority of French students support and approve of this measure (#70% support), whereas it is more controversial among international students who are less familiar with this requirement (41% not in favor). The detailed report is available:https://lnkd.in/euGXFcpr. A detailed presentation will be done by the team during next GA (16-18 October 2024) in Polytechnique Montréal, Canada. Link:https://lnkd.in/eWrGaFrG At last, a warm thanks to the #TIME Members, students, colleagues who took the time to answer the surveys! Do not hesitate to contact us. Surveys are still open.

A shift in public #funding for #universities is emerging, with some governments exploring dialogue-based funding as an alternative to performance-based models. This approach involves direct discussions between governments and universities to agree on specific outcomes, rather than relying solely on quantitative measures such as student numbers or scientific publications. Countries such as Austria and Finland have incorporated this model into their funding strategies, reflecting a move towards more flexible and collaborative frameworks. 💡 Learn more about it: https://lnkd.in/eEcpEhF9
