Better for the #environment, better for #business. That's the tagline for the Federal Government's Nature Positive Plan, the result of the Samuel's Review into the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act). Striking the right balance between environmental protection and the other social & economic necessities of life such as delivering adequate housing supply is difficult. But it can be done. As we stand today, one of the biggest handbrakes on delivering #housingsupply is environmental assessment and approvals. Whether its at State or Federal level or a combination of the two - unless we deliver the streamlined reform outcomes promised, the pain we feel now from lack of housing will only be prolonged and perhaps even worse. So it was refreshing to hear Alistair Jones, the Director General of the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation speak at today's Urban Development Institute of Australia (WA) industry event to a packed house about the action being taken to deliver on the promises. Along with David McFerran, co-author of the review into the State's environmental processes, assessment and approvals, Dale Newsome from Western Environmental on the risks & opportunities of the Nature Positive reform and Lucy Shea with the legal lens - we were left optimistic that the balance can and will be struck in WA. Many thanks to our event partners, DevelopmentWA, Mirvac and Western Environmental for their support.

The announcement yesterday by Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment to put in place the building blocks of an EPA under the nature positive plan, that will administer the existing legislation ahead of the main body of Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) reform, was welcomed by UDIA National. For too long the EPBC Act has been a significant drag on new housing projects. The decision promises more accountability and transparency under the new EPA with industry access to data and progress reports. Critically, it assures industry that there will be faster environmental approvals on projects," Col Dutton, UDIA National President. “The Minister is doing the right thing by taking time to reform the environmental system in stages to make sure it works for all the industries that need efficient and effective decisions. It also gives industry a chance to see how the EPA performs to remove the significant backlog of environmental issues currently holding up projects,“ he said. UDIA National will always support the government in trying to create an efficient and effective system because it is absolutely vital for the prosperity of Australia. Have your say on our Environment! As you may have seen Auckland Council is seeking feedback on various proposals and options relating to its Long-term Plan 2024-2034. The results of the survey could have major implications for environmental projects on Waiheke and beyond on our neighbouring islands. Therefore, although this is a complex document, it is important for anyone with an interest in conservation to give their feedback. The key Environmental question in the survey is 6a which asks whether people support reinstating the Natural Environment Targeted Rate (Central Proposal recommendation). Ticking 'support' here would help to ensure we do not see funding cuts for environmental projects on Waiheke. Breaking: EU Approves Nature Restoration Law Initially introduced in 2022, hope had waned after member states showed opposition late in the process and a vote on the law was removed from the agenda. In an extremely tight vote with 66% approval (65% required to pass), The Nature Restoration Law was approved today by the EU Council with last minute support from Austria’s Environment Minister. EU countries must now restore 30% of degraded habitats by 2030, 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050. This law comes on the heels, and is aligned with the targets, of The Global Biodiversity Framework. The passing of this legislation will hopefully make it easier for other GBF signatory governments to pass similar legislation to foster a nature positive transition. #nature #naturepositive #GBF #SDGs #EUPolicy #sustainability #ESG #globalgoals #sustainabledevelpment #justtransition #climate #climatechange

The City of Detroit, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (EPA), is seeking community input to compile a list of environmentally beneficial projects (EBP) aimed at reducing pollution in the air, water, or on land. The goal is to create a resource of project ideas generated by community members and groups that can be used for future funding opportunities, such as grants or enforcement settlements. To be considered, an EBP idea must directly benefit Detroit residents by reducing environmental pollution. These projects aim to improve the environment and quality of life for the community. The forthcoming debate on the Built Environment Committee’s recent report on “The impact of environmental regulations on development” seemed as good an option as any for my maiden speech in the UK House of Lords on 19th April. The report’s subject matters include nutrient neutrality and the habitats regime, and I look forward to providing some insight on those, drawing on my previous role as Chair of JNCC and my ongoing practice at the Bar. #planning #environment #nutrientneutrality #habitats #housing

TCCI Out and About: Supporting Clearer Timelines for Environmental Approvals On Tuesday 1st October 2024, TCCI CEO Michael Bailey OAM attended an announcement from Senator Richard Colbeck about the proposed timeline for the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. The amendment aims to introduce a 36-month limit on reconsideration requests, providing much-needed certainty for businesses navigating environmental approvals. Michael highlighted how the current EPBC Act has been creating delays that slow down key projects in Tasmania. TCCI sees an opportunity to streamline the approval process, making Tasmania a more attractive place for investment. Michael urged Tasmania’s federal MPs to support the bill, saying, “We are calling on all of Tasmania’s federal MPs to back the bill as the first step towards some commonsense in our environmental legislation.” TCCI remains committed to advocating for reforms that balance business growth with sustainable environmental practices, helping to secure a better future for all Tasmanians. #TCCIOutAndAbout #EPBCReform #BusinessAdvocacy #EnvironmentalTimeline #TasmanianGrowth

What will Australia’s proposed Environment Information Agency do for nature? The Albanese govt introduced legislation to create a new statutory body called Environment Information Australia. Why do we need it? Australia’s natural world is in steep decline – based on what we know. But there’s much we don’t know. It’s hard to care for and restore nature if we don’t know how we are tracking, where to invest our efforts and into which activities. The proposed agency will make environmental data more accessible by creating a platform. The agency fills a gap in our environmental management regime. But by itself, it won’t improve outcomes for nature. The most important actions needed to reduce Australia’s rapid losses of nature are the long-promised stronger environmental protection laws, which have been delayed indefinitely and a many-fold increase in funding for on-ground conservation programs. If we want to tackle Australia’s biodiversity crisis we have to be absolutely clear about the problems we are seeking to solve and get the basics right. #sustainability #esg #renewableenergy

🌿 Yesterday, the EU Environmental Council finally adopted the Nature Restoration Law, marking the final step for this long-awaited proposal to become law. This outcome is a huge win for Europe’s nature, climate action, citizens, and future! 🌍💚 Member States followed through with their commitments, and with a majority of 20 countries representing 66.07% of the population, the law was officially endorsed. 🌱 Restoring Land and Sea Ecosystems 🌊 The new rules will help restore degraded ecosystems across member states’ land and sea habitats, achieve the EU’s overarching objectives on climate mitigation and adaptation, and enhance food security. 🌍🌿 The regulation requires member states to establish and implement measures to jointly restore, as an EU target, at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030. 🌐🌱 The regulation covers a range of terrestrial, coastal, and freshwater, forest, agricultural, and urban ecosystems, including wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers, and lakes, as well as marine ecosystems, including seagrass and sponge and coral beds. 🏞️🌊 Until 2030, member states will prioritize Natura 2000 sites when implementing the restoration measures. 🌿✨ For habitats deemed in poor condition, as listed in the regulation, member states will take measures to restore: at least 30% by 2030 at least 60% by 2040 at least 90% by 2050 See more : https://lnkd.in/eegS7MwT #RestorationLaw #RestoreNature #Biodiversity

Hogan Lovells' Jacqueline Mailly and Grégoire Paquet write: In a surprising turn of events, the Council of EU Environment Ministers formally adopted on 17 June 2024, the much-contested EU Nature Restoration Law. The new Law sets specific, legally binding, targets and obligations for restoring diverse ecosystems, ranging from terrestrial landscapes to marine, freshwater, and urban environments. For the first time ever, it lays down measures not only to preserve but to restore nature. #europeanunion #environment #climatechange #biodiversity #sustainability
