A relevant approach for today

Building trust is a process that requires intentionality, authenticity, humility, and a willingness to reexamine institutional norms and narratives. Melissa Tribelhorn, MPA and Northwest Association for Biomedical Research are providing critical thought leadership on an important frontier at the intersection of healthcare and technology to weigh the benefits and risks of rapid technological advancement in patient data acquisition and the potential impact on a range of products from consumer healthcare devices to breakthrough therapeutic discoveries. I deeply appreciate the approach through a critical policy lens - ie. how can we create an environment that propels new innovation while being mindful of maintaining sensible guardrails along the way?

Excited to share that I've earned a certificate in 'Thinking Critically: Interpreting Randomized Clinical Trials' from Stanford Medicine! This comprehensive program equipped me with essential skills to: •⁠ ⁠Critically evaluate randomized controlled trials (RCTs) •⁠ ⁠Assess study design, methodology, and results •⁠ ⁠Identify biases and limitations •⁠ ⁠Interpret statistical analysis and results •⁠ ⁠Apply evidence-based medicine in clinical decision-making Grateful for Stanford Medicine's expertise and commitment to advancing medical knowledge.

We need more discussions like this on how AI can make meaningful contributions to humanity, improved healthcare outcomes being one great example. It’s an area where Canada can and should lead.

Our #CTSCCLEHealth Director of Evaluation, Dr. Clara M. Pelfrey, and Dr. Deborah DiazGranados, Director of Evaluation at VCU C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research, along with their colleagues are co-leading a national CTSA Working Group focused on 'Learning about the science of translation: Identifying best practices to accelerate the translational process through case studies'. The workgroup will conduct a comparative analysis of many kinds of successful translational science case studies.   The purpose of this collaboration is to generate new knowledge about the nature of the translational process by investigating and comparing successful translational science cases that have led to positive impacts on human health. I’m really happy to share that with the publication of this study, we, at The Medical Futurist Institute, have taken a huge step toward a dream of mine we’ve had for many years: to make medical futures studies a new scientific field! This scoping review, ‘𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭’, that we published in JMIR takes a journey into the existing literature on the application of futures methods in healthcare, and it reveals that these methods have been successfully used to develop national strategies, inform healthcare policies, prepare for global threats like pandemics, and explore advancements in specialized medical fields like personalized medicine. However, we also proved that despite its potential, futures methods have been underutilized in the medical community. There’s a significant gap: the lack of structured methodologies and principles for employing futures techniques in healthcare, that’s exactly why we need medical futures studies.  You can read the full scoping review at the link below, and we’ll be back with more exciting news about this topic soon! **Exploring the Future of Precision Medicine with Dr. Mark Kristiansen ** This is a secret I have kept for a while 👀👀👀 I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Mark Kristiansen, the Head of Genomics at the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children (ZCR), UCL half a year ago, during which we delved into the future of precision medicine, its challenges, and how we can address them. In our discussion, Dr. Kristiansen emphasized the importance of public engagement in personalized medicine - the need for transparency and openness in scientific work, which is embodied in the 'fish tank' design of the ZCR lab. He also touched on the challenges posed by the diverse nature of personalized medicine and the danger of false information, stressing the importance of truthful communication to maintain public trust and the need for a tailored education strategy in different contexts. Lastly, he underscored the role of healthcare providers in informing patients about novel therapies and the need for government involvement in integrating personalized medicine into traditional clinical trials and approval systems. Nevertheless, we both agreed that the future of personalised medicine is optimistic, but the road to a better future is always an uphill climb.
