The Queensland Government has released the Queensland Level Crossing Safety Strategy, outlining a 10-year strategy aimed at making level crossings safer for rail and road users. In addition to the release of the South East Queensland Level Crossing Program 2024 last week, $10 million has also been set aside to identify solutions for future priority level crossings. A three-year Action Plan was launched alongside the strategy as part of Rail Safety Week, which centres around improving safety based on: 🔹 enforcement 🔹 education 🔹 technology and innovation 🔹 data capture and coordination It’s a fantastic initiative, and we’re thrilled to see such significant investment being made into the safety of our rail industry. Our Plan Safe consultants have delivered safety assurance programs for some of Australia’s most recent rail projects – including the Waratah ETCS upgrade in Sydney CBD and the Sydney Metro Project - and offer a profound understanding of the needs and complexities inherent in the design, build and implementation of transport infrastructure. We look forward to collaborating with new industrial partners in the rail sector on their design safety programs moving forward. 📞 1300 030 361 📧 [email protected]

As cities invest in light rail systems to reduce congestion and promote greener transport, it’s crucial to learn from global best practices, especially regarding safety. Recently, one UK light rail tram operator needed to conduct a review of common safety methods for risk evaluation and deliver recommendations to meet industry good practice. Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) Consultancy applied its expertise to meet this client’s needs.

Some wise words from Colin Calder Building a high speed rail network in Australia will definitely rely on agreement and collaboration across all levels of government and through the life of successive administrations. While running high speed trains on existing infrastructure can possibly deliver capital savings it will also, inevitably, lead to compromise in speed and efficiency meaning that 3.5 hour journey time time between Sydney and Melbourne becomes a pipe dream. Nowhere was this compromise illustrated more clearly than in the disastrous West Coast Route Modernization program, between London and Glasgow in the UK. The original design speed of 140mph was lowered to 125mph which is little more than the 110mph already achieved in many sections of the West Coast Main line at the time. Meanwhile cost ballooned from around £2.5 billion to £14.5 billion by some accounts. Carrying out major upgrades in an operational rail environment is not for the faint hearted. I say build new or be damned. #infrastructure #projectmanagement Engineers Australia RP Infrastructure Patries Twaalfhoven

The Federal Government will fund a trial of radar technology able to detect approaching objects as it investigates new, low-cost ways of improving safety at level crossings in regional areas. The radar trial is one of four projects to share $800,000 in government research and innovation grants under the second round of the Regional Australia Level Crossing Safety Program (RALCSP). Six projects shared nearly $3 million under the first round of the program. According to the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator, there are almost 11,000 operational level crossings across Australia shared by road vehicles and rail traffic. Of those, almost 7,000 are considered 'passive control crossings' with stop or give way signs and 1500 are considered unprotected. The $180 million Regional Australia Level Crossing Safety Program also includes funding for infrastructure upgrades such as the installation of rumble strips or boom gates.
