NATO-backed Ephos raises $8.5M Seed for glass-based photonic chips: https://lnkd.in/exW4UYWQ The new Milan facility will deliver glass-based photonic chips at-scale in anticipation of a new era of quantum and light-based computational infrastructure. Ephos, a producer of glass-based photonic chips, has raised an $8.5M seed funding round and will open a research and manufacturing facility in Milan, the world's first dedicated to producing glass-based quantum photonic circuits. In addition, Ephos has received funding from the European Union and NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator (DIANA). A few days after closing the Inpho Venture Summit, I wanted to share some insights from our workshop on photonics and semiconductors, highlighting the need for #competitivefunding and #strategic partnerships   💡 Key Takeaways: 1. High-Impact Funding: The European Innovation Council (EIC), represented in the workshop by Isabel Obieta Vilallonga, offers a highly selective yet impactful funding mechanism. Christian Reitberger from Matterwave Ventures noted the strength of EIC support for startups. 2. Significant Capital Needs: Building semiconductor and photonics facilities requires substantial investment. Investors are open to these requirements if the business case is strong. 3. Malaysia’s Ambition in Semiconductors: We had insightful input from Shariman Jamil, from SMD Semiconductor, sharing Sarawak’s bold plans to establish itself in the semiconductor industry. Buys UK Chipmaker Graphcore 💾 🤖 As some of you remember, Graphcore was introduced to the market as a rival to NVIDIA and AMD; they were struggling to become a strong rival, and according to Nigel Toon (CEO) and #SimonKnowles (CTO), company’s biggest issue was a lack of scale and capital. 💸 📈 📌 Generating just $2.7mn in sales and $205mn in pre-tax losses in 2022, Graphcore needed to raise capital to stay afloat, and SoftBank is a significant figure to have on the board as an investor since quadrupling Arm's value after their investment. GCP has invested as a lead investor in this round.   They have consistently achieved significant milestones—remarkably so for a deep tech company. This kind of progress is truly rare in the deep tech space.   In addition to nearing mass production, ODD have been attracting top talent from across generations, which is crucial for scaling up production.
