#DeepTech: Europe’s next big leap? At the Falling Walls Science Summit last week, I joined Michael Brigl, Bernd Scheifele and Peter Soelkner for a CEO Table focusing on ‘From Science Breakthroughs to Market Success‘. The discussion was centered on bridging the gap between groundbreaking scientific discoveries and their translation into marketable applications—a key challenge for Germany as an innovation hub. Our conversation touched on many key insights from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Consulting Group’s report "From Lab to Leader: Unlocking Europe’s €8 trillion Deep Tech Opportunity," highlighting Europe’s potential to become a global leader in this space. For me, some key takeaways were: 1. A cultural shift is necessary (amongst others, we really need the next generations to see founding a business as a "normal" career option), 2. "Spin-offs" should be included as a true third pillar for universities and institutes next to Research and Teaching, and 3. We need far more ecosystem linkages and cooperation between all relevant stakeholders. Should You Raise Funds from VCs at the Pre-Seed Stage? I have a clear stance on this: it's better to spend this time on execution. This is something I’ve emphasized in consultations over the past couple of weeks. Why? Because there are many funds out there that claim to invest at the pre-seed and seed stages. Founders compile lists of these funds, reach out, and - voila! They get a response, and even a call is scheduled. At this point, founders might think they’re close to securing the funds, but from the VC side, this is often just part of their deal flow gathering process. An associate will take the call, listen attentively, and tell you that you’re doing great and have an interesting idea. They’ll ask you to keep them updated on your progress. Then, they’ll put your startup’s info into a CRM, and if you’re lucky, they might check back in a few months to see if you have traction. Of course, it’s possible that you’ll captivate them and secure an investment. But in most cases I’ve seen, founders spend 2-3 months (or even up to 6) trying to raise funds from VCs, only to find that they could’ve spent that time on execution instead. With some initial traction, you’ll open the doors to a broader range of seed investors who are ready to invest in a project with proof of traction. If you have a stellar team and are a second-time founder with a successful exit, you likely don’t need this exercise, as you probably already have a line of interested investors - especially those who backed you before. Early-stage rounds have been particularly hit, reaching their lowest point since 2015. "The report predicts that there will be just over 4,000 early-stage deals (of less than $15m) in 2024 — the lowest number since 2015." Rise of Venture Debt: Venture debt has experienced a record year, reaching $4.7 billion in the first three quarters of 2024. This represents 14% of total VC funding, suggesting startups are seeking alternative financing options in a tighter funding environment. "In the first three quarters of 2024, European startups raised $4.7bn in venture debt, equal to 14% of the total share of VC funding — the highest figure on record." Transatlantic Funding Gap: A significant funding gap persists between European and US startups, particularly at later stages. This gap is estimated to have cost European startups around $300 billion in potential funding since 2015. "The report estimates that means Europe has missed out on around $300bn in funding since 2015 as a result." Deep Tech and Sustainability: Deep tech startups, particularly in AI, continue to attract significant investment, accounting for 33% of total capital in 2024. However, Europe lags behind the US in AI funding. On the other hand, Europe leads in sustainability investments with 21% of funding going towards climate tech startups. "Europe lags way behind the US for AI funding in 2024, though. This year, the report predicts US AI startups will pick up $47bn, compared to Europe's $11bn." "There are positive notes to be found in funding for Europe’s climate tech sector, though. 21% of funding in the region goes towards startups working in climate tech — compared with just 11% in the US." Talent Drain to the US: The US continues to attract European tech talent, with a net loss of 492 technical workers in 2023. This trend is attributed to the allure of high salaries and opportunities at major tech companies. "The report says the pull of big tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon or IBM — and the inflated salary packages they offer — is one factor for talent moving." Gender Funding Gap Persists: The gender funding gap remains a serious concern, with no significant improvement at any funding stage. The situation has even worsened at the pre-seed and Series A levels. "There’s been no marked improvement at any stage on Europe’s dire gender funding gap figures — and in the case of pre-seed and Series A, things have got worse." Growth Over the Decade: Despite recent challenges, the past decade has witnessed a tenfold increase in tech funding in Europe, reaching $426 billion. The number of unicorns has surged by 500%, and the tech talent pool has expanded sevenfold.

Really innovative (and much needed) proposal by Tanja Havemann and Adam Wolfensohn to direct catalytic capital to emerging markets, where first time fund managers and founders, very much knowledgeable of their markets’ idiosyncrasies and opportunities, certainly could make use of warehousing vehicles to assist them launch their investment propositions. This would not only accelerate investments in clean technologies and climate assets in those markets, but also revert in the solidification and growth of the asset management sector in emerging economies as well as catalyze larger sums of capital in the regions that need it the most. #climatefinance #blendedfinance #emergingmarkets #climateinvestments

While today we see bustling VC hubs in London, Berlin, Paris, and Stockholm, the foundations of this industry on the continent are deeply rooted in the economic transformations of the mid-20th century. 1️⃣ Post-World War II Economic Boom The origins of European VC can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II. The devastating impacts of the war left many European economies in dire need of reconstruction and revitalization. During this period, Europe looked across the Atlantic to the United States, where VC was gaining traction. In the U.S., the success of early VC firms such as American Research and Development Corporation (ARDC), founded in 1946 by Georges Doriot, demonstrated the potential of investing in innovative startups. This inspired European policymakers and entrepreneurs to explore similar models. 2️⃣ Early Ventures and Institutional Support The 1950s and 1960s marked the beginning of formalized VC activities in Europe. Governments played a pivotal role in nurturing this nascent industry. During this period, European countries began to see the establishment of VC-like entities. These organizations were often closely tied to banks or government initiatives aimed at supporting SMEs. The goal was to foster innovation and economic growth through investment in new technologies and industries. 3️⃣ Influence of the 1970s & 1980s The 1970s and 1980s were transformative decades for European VC. The oil crises of the 1970s highlighted the need for economic diversification and innovation. In response, European countries began to liberalize financial markets and promote entrepreneurial activities more vigorously. During this time, we witnessed the emergence of independent VC firms 🎉. These firms began to mirror their American counterparts, focusing on technology and high-growth potential startups. 4️⃣ The Rise of Pan-European Investment The 1990s and early 2000s saw the rise of pan-European venture capital activity. With the establishment of the European Union and the introduction of the single market, cross-border investments became more feasible and attractive. The European Investment Fund (EIF), established in 1994, played a crucial role in catalyzing VC investments across Europe. By providing funding and guarantees, it supported the growth of the VC ecosystem and helped bridge the gap between different markets. 5️⃣ Modern Era Today, the European VC industry is a dynamic and integral part of the global startup ecosystem. The success stories of European unicorns like Spotify, Klarna and Revolut highlight the maturity and potential of the region’s VC landscape. Europe’s VC industry has carved out its unique identity. The emphasis on sustainability, social impact, and diverse market opportunities reflects the continent’s values and economic diversity.

🚀 Here are some of the early-stage VC investments I've seen over the past week fueling innovation in sectors like AI, medtech, and sustainability across 🇪🇺 Europe 🇪🇺. Beyond Aero: The French aerospace startup raised $20 million to develop hydrogen-powered electric jets. The funding round was co-led by Giant Ventures and French sovereign fund Bpifrance, with participation from Initialized Capital, Female Founders Fund, and 7percent Ventures Ventures. Hertility, Co-founded by Dr Helen O'Neill, Hertility Health has raised $15.7 million to date, including angel investor actress Emma Watson, and is currently seeking an additional $20 million to advance its mission of improving women's reproductive health through at-home testing and data-driven diagnostics. Wobby: An Antwerp-based AI-powered information platform, #Wobby secured €1.1 million in seed funding. This investment from, Shaping Impact Group, Si3 fund, V Ventures Llc and imec.istart, will support its expansion into new European markets and its initial entry into the U.S. market. Foodsi: Warsaw-based Foodsi raised €1.2 million to combat food waste in restaurants and stores. The funding round was led by CofounderZone, with participation from several angel investors. Aignostics: Based in Berlin, #Aignostics secured €31.4 million in a Series B funding round to enhance precision medicine through AI. The round was led by Wellington Partners and Evotec, with participation from existing investors Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund and HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds. GlassFlow: A Berlin-based startup, GlassFlow secured €4.43 million to enable Python developers to build event-driven data pipelines. The seed funding round was led by Earlybird Venture Capital, with participation from 42CAP and several angel investors. Modash Tallinn-based Modash, a creator partnerships platform, secured $12 million in a Series A funding round. The investment aims to accelerate the company's growth and expand its market reach. Scalpel, A London-based medtech startup, Scalpel AI raised £3.8 million in a funding round led by Mercia Ventures. The company specialises in developing AI-driven solutions for surgical procedures.
