I recently completed Red Bull's On-Premise Sales virtual internship on Forage where I engaged in a realistic job simulation focused on enhancing Red Bull presence in on-premise locations. My tasks included utilizing Excel to meticulously analyze client performance, distinguishing between high and low performers. I communicated these findings to the Red Bull team, explaining the reasons behind varying client success. Additionally, I used active listening and social proof techniques to effectively address client concerns, ultimately persuading a bar to increase its promotion of Red Bull. A little job well done is the first step toward a bigger one. Success is more of a process than an event. Great success is achieved after a long string of small successes. Most of us earn our stripes one step at a time, and we work our way up through the ranks. When we begin our careers, we are given assignments that are commensurate with our skill and experience. As we prove our worth to the organization, we are gradually entrusted with more responsibility for one position, do so with an eye toward the next one. Do your absolute best every day in your job, but always plan for the future. View each day as an opportunity to learn something that will make you more valuable to the company or organization so that when the tie arrives for promotions, your name will be the first one that comes to the boss’s mind. #napoleanhill

I watched a clip of Glen Powell this weekend, who has seen his career absolutely take off the past few years (link to clip in the comments). In the clip, he talks about auditioning for the role of Rooster in Top Gun, which as you know, he did not get (shout out to Miles Teller). When Glen found out that he didn't get the role, he was crushed. Tom Cruise called him and asked if he'd be open to still being in the movie, to which Glen Powell said he wasn't sure it was worth it. Glen agreed to sit down with him though, and in that conversation Tom asked him what kind of career he wanted. Glen said that he wanted a career like his. He wanted to be the greatest of all time. Tom then asked him if he knew how Tom got there, to which Glen said, "Yeah, you choose great roles." Tom responded: "No, I choose great movies and I make the roles great." It changed Glen's perspective entirely. He ended up doing Top Gun, made his supporting role great, and has since landed several amazing roles/movies (including Twisters, which I saw on Friday and highly recommend). I love this story. Reminds me of Sheryl Sandberg's quote: "If you're offered a seat on a rocket ship, don't ask what seat! Just get on." I remember being offered an internship at Uber back in 2016. This was peak Uber hype, Travis Kalanick was still at the helm, and the business was on an absolute tear. I would have accepted a job cleaning the bathrooms at Uber if it meant the chance to learn and observe that company. Thankfully, I got to do more than that and work with several incredible people. Just that one experience has impacted by career tremendously. As you evaluate career opportunities, do everything you can to work with exceptional people building exceptional companies. Worry less about what you will be doing, and worry more about being exceptional yourself. Everything else will take care of itself.

Brutal tip for students to become a corporate superstars. Get a job description of a position you want to be in within the next couple of years. List out all the skills needed for that role. All the skills you don’t have, start to work on them now so that you become ready for such a role in the next couple of years.

How I landed my first job with Masterlift Ireland at 16 with ZERO experience I applied for a summer job at Masterlift back then. Got called for an interview in October (…after summer had ended). During the interview, I remember Dermot Carroll asking me: "Why should I give you the job? You've no experience." My response? "It's the likes of you that won't give the likes of me a chance. I have no experience, but you're looking for experience. Who's going to give me a chance?" I’ll never forget the look he gave me. But he hired me on the spot. I started that day. Worked the full week. On Friday, my mam asked what I thought. I said: "I like it, I think I'll stay." And that's exactly what happened. I never went back to school (except to sit my leaving cert). So, don’t let lack of experience stop you. Be bold. Ask for a chance. Many managers respect that initiative. 32 years later, I still use this approach when facing new challenges. And it STILL works. Remember: Everyone starts somewhere. Your attitude matters more than your experience.
