What’s up doc? 🐰 🥕 Anyone know what this is? No, this is not simply the humble carrot. This is the somewhat infamous HANGING carrot. That’s right that thing your current employer does when they realise you aren’t getting what you need from your current role and you start to weigh up your options or even getting another opportunity presented… Enthusiastic talk of promotions, a bump in salary, some additional responsibility, the promise of ‘bigger things to come ‘… or at a last resort the counter offer. I’m sure many of you will have had the carrot hung. As tempting as it is always remember the following… 🥕 Why did you start to explore your options? 🥕 Why has it taken you to secure another offer before the pay rise or promotion is offered? 🥕Will anything really change or will you be in the same position in 6 months time? 🥕If they can offer it now, why couldn’t they last week or the week before? Loyalty is great, but your loyalty should always be rewarded with recognition from the person you show it to. It shouldn’t take a sudden ‘oh shit we are going to loose them’ moment for your employer to start pulling out the big guns. And yes I did grow this carrot. Thanks.

It’s been 5 months at Quick Quack Car Wash for me. I keep pinching myself as I look back on my list of requirements for my next role from my job search over the summer. I can’t seem to find one of those things missing from Quick Quack. I definitely won’t be quitting my day job to become a professional golfer. Being gifted this a while back by one of Paragon Skills very own Ops Directors Janet Owens is still a highlight of my professional career. Having senior colleagues go out of their way to recognise positivity across their direct reports and wider colleagues is such an inspirational way to engage and motivate people to continue to go above and beyond. Especially during periods of significant growth. Since getting my positive carrot it sits nicely on my desk and I often reflect on my day and what has happened that I can feel positive about, or how I have been a positive carrot. Question to Hiring Managers in Sports and Business: If the mission of your team/company is to climb a tree, why do you consistently try to train horses instead of hiring squirrels? In my job search, this seems to be the case. Just curious.....

Fair isn't always equal and equal isn't necessarily fair... when building a team a lesson I learned is exactly this… Learn your team members strengths, their goals, and their aspirations... then execute and assign opportunities accordingly. If someone wants to be super early everyday but has family/kids to take care of in the evening, and another has a more chaotic morning routing but is happy closing up - then don't battle that... roll with it. It's not equal - but it's fair and everyone can be happy. This relates to different types of opportunities too ... if you have a salesperson strongest on phones - you're better off letting them run with that and getting someone else who excels at walk in traffic to handle fresh customers. It's not equal but it's fair.

Unasked for advice for Creatives (especially those with less than 5 years of experience): when deciding whether to stay put or take a new job that doesn't include a huge bump in salary but will let you produce great work you can bank on later in your career, GO FOR THE WORK and the money will come. What does cleaning up horse poop have to do with agency layoffs? This story is about evolution, adaptation, and the harsh realities of progress. In New York City, back in the late 19th century, there existed a unique workforce tirelessly dedicated to keeping the city clean. These were the street cleaners, tasked with removing the abundant horse manure that littered the roads—a necessary chore in the age of horse-drawn carriages. Back then, their work was essential. Enter the age of automobiles—the era of horse-drawn carriages came to an abrupt end, replaced by sleek, modern automobiles that left behind not piles of manure but trails of exhaust. The crossing sweepers and street cleaners, once vital to the city's functioning, found themselves facing extinction. While an entire industry was basically eliminated overnight, the creation of cars created thousands of new jobs in a thriving new industry. From carmakers, mechanics, to gas stations, new jobs were popping up everywhere. So how can we learn from this lesson in the agency layoff era we find ourselves in? Stop shoveling horse poop and lean into the new technologies and jobs that are popping up everywhere.
