SHARED STRUGGLES! Leading science organisations make an impassioned plea to government to support basic (curiosity-driven) research. Many thanks to The Physiological Society who in 2023 weighed in on debate this side of the Irish Sea with the launch of their report at the Houses of the Oireachtas (Parliament of Ireland). The report showcased the research interests of Fiona Mc Donald (oxygen dysregulation in neonatal life) and Jack Leacy (neurovascular coupling and cognition) from the Department of Physiology, UCC. "Ireland has achieved limited progress towards the Innovation 2020 report’s research intensity rate target of 2.5% of GNP, which rose from 1.55% in 2015 to an estimated 1.63% in 2020. Since basic research provides the foundation required for mission-led R&D and is vital to the success of the National Grand Challenges Programme in Ireland, it is important that basic research is at the core of any government strategy to increase R&D spending". hear! hear! The Physiological Society John Cryan John O'Halloran Research Ireland #physiologychangestheworld
The Physiological Society has joined other leading science organisations in the UK, including @sciencecampaign @wellcometrust and the @RussellGroup in writing to the Government ahead of the Budget. Our joint letter highlights the importance of stable, long-term investment in R&D in order to fuel #economicgrowth and boost #productivity. This will enable #researchers and innovators to continue driving the high-skill sectors and cutting-edge #technologies that will help shape the UK’s future. Further, stable public investment will also help leverage the private investment needed to achieve the Government’s ambitions for growth. 🔗 Read about the letter here:

Great and damning summary on how this government feel about our sector.
I've got to agree with NZ Association of Scientists co-president Troy Baisden on Budget 2024: “Aside from 1991, I doubt there’s ever been such a clear case that we’re determined to fall behind peer nations with our investment in research, science, innovation and technology." The appropriations make for grim reading, especially the haircuts for the core contestable research funds. From a strategy point of view, I can only think that Hon Judith Collins KC MP is waiting for the Science Sector Advisory Group to report back to lay the groundwork for more coherent and sustained investment in future years. I've attempted to summarise all the red ink leaking out of the sector, headline inspired by Ben Reid's succinct X tweet on the Budget. Here is what we lose when policymakers decide to allocate funds to different government agencies/programs and reduce funding for scientific research. VOTE 🗳️ 1. Advancing knowledge: Research leads to new discoveries and innovations, expanding our understanding of the world and universe around us. 2. Solving problems: Scientific research addresses pressing issues facing society, such as disease, climate change, energy production, and environmental sustainability. 3. Technological development: Research drives the development of new technologies, improving quality of life and driving economic growth. 4. Informing policy: Scientific evidence informs policymaking, helping governments make informed decisions on issues ranging from public health to environmental regulation. 5. Fostering critical thinking: Engaging in research promotes critical thinking skills, encourages curiosity, and cultivates a culture of evidence-based inquiry. Scientific research plays a crucial role in driving progress and addressing the challenges facing humanity.

In the below Science|Business article, I explained the rationales behind the Research Matters Campaign together with my colleagues from #EUPRIO - European Association of Communication Professionals in Higher Education, YERUN - Young European Research Universities, and Science Europe. On behalf of The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, I re-assert the need to significantly increase investment in R&I to achieve the ambition to bolster the competitiveness of Europe and to make it future-proof. I fully agree with Silvia Gómez Recio: Increased investment in R&I must benefit fundamental research. It is also important to ensure that social sciences, arts and humanities are better integrated in funded research projects. In a flurry of position papers released over the past few months, research lobbies have been calling for a €200 billion budget for FP10. Now, some of those organisations have teamed up to launch Research Matters campaign, a joint call to increase R&D funding at EU and national levels: https://lnkd.in/dVBnshff

With the new Government's #AutumnBudget cantering towards us, there are increasing rumours of budgets being squeezed or cut. We're reaching out to all parliamentarians to make the case for protecting #research funding. Research carried out by #universities will play a vital role in boosting growth and productivity. Reduced research investment would seriously curtail the ability of the UK’s universities to support progress against the Government's economic #growth ambitions, via the #IndustrialStrategy, as well as the aim to build an #NHS fit for the future and make Britain a #CleanEnergy superpower. Such cuts would also only exacerbate the precarious financial situation many institutions across #HigherEducation already find themselves in. ✂ Cuts to Research and Development funding will seriously undermine the UK Government’s new Industrial Strategy 📚 Reductions to Department for Science, Innovation and Technology budget will only exacerbate the crisis in Higher Education funding 💷 An unstable funding landscape will negatively impact inward investment, creating mixed-messaging immediately following the UK Government’s #InternationalInvestmentSummit The University of Birmingham's public affairs team are working with colleagues across the Russell Group of Universities and HE to raise these issues directly with parliamentarians of all political colours to protect research funding in the UK.

Protecting R&D budgets is essential not only to protect the UK's world leading R&D activity but to protect the UK economy. Wes Streeting talks about health being an economic issue, and this is a fundamental thread of that argument. Investment in R&D is one of the strongest investments a government can make, providing good proven economic returns but also societal benefits from improved health to access to technology. A country with strong R&D has a healthier, wealthier population. Wellcome Sanger Institute have signed a letter asking the Chancellor to protect the UK's R&D spend.

Future Planet Capital is pleased to welcome the UK government’s measures in the Spring Budget aimed at supporting the country’s most promising young businesses. Backing these later-stage, high-growth start-ups founded in the UK’s leading research institutes is vital to propel growth in cutting edge and challenge-led sectors like Artificial Intelligence, Climate Technologies, Engineering Biology, Quantum Computing and Semiconductors. We believe that close coordination between the private sector and government is essential in accelerating innovation. The measures announced yesterday to unlock much needed pension capital are a positive step forward, building on the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s Mansion House reforms and the Long-term Investment for Technology and Science programme by the British Business Bank. It is plain to see that the UK has top-tier research facilities and academic institutions, along with an abundance of scientific expertise. We’re eager and excited to work with the Government and private stakeholders to nurture this ecosystem, and to help unlock the full potential of the UK’s most innovative companies. I hope the rumours about potential cuts to UK government science budgets are wrong. Science gives us our best chance of finding solutions to the many sticky problems we face in the world today. The UK is a global science superpower; if its government defunds science, that decision could encourage other governments, companies and philanthropies to do the same. That would be self-defeating on so many levels. Proud to be part of Wellcome Trust that has a long history of advocating for science and has joined other partners in mobilizing the business case for investing in science. https://lnkd.in/g8F5-cyE

Why is this bad for the economy? "Nearly a third of the $10 billion in federal research funds that 26 of the universities in our consortium used in 2022 directly supported U.S. employers, including: **A Detroit welding shop that sells gases many labs use in experiments funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense and Department of Energy. **A Dallas-based construction company that is building an advanced vaccine and drug development facility paid for by the Department of Health and Human Services. **More than a dozen Utah businesses, including surveyors, engineers and construction and trucking companies, working on a Department of Energy project to develop breakthroughs in geothermal energy." #researchfunding #economicimpact #federalbudget
The recent federal budget deal and President Biden's proposed FY25 budget both fall short of the science funding levels promised in the CHIPS and Science Act. Why does it matter?
