In 2024, Africa’s political landscape is being reshaped not just by elections but by the rampant spread of disinformation. As voters in countries like Namibia, Botswana, and Mozambique prepare to cast their ballots, they are bombarded with waves of falsehoods designed to exploit ethnic and political tensions. The rise of artificial intelligence has made it easier for malicious actors to create hyper-realistic fake content, further confusing voters and eroding trust in democratic institutions. This issue of Africa in Fact explores the far-reaching consequences of misinformation, particularly in regions already beset by conflict, as seen in Mozambique’s insurgent-hit Cabo Delgado region. To combat this growing threat, the magazine calls for a collective effort to strengthen electoral institutions, promote digital literacy, and hold social media companies accountable for their role in spreading false information. 𝐄𝐏𝐎 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 - 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, established in December 2021, aims to facilitate discussions among political and social groups. Despite broad support to national dialogue, implementation has faced challenges, including opposition from key armed groups and political parties. The commission has conducted participation selection in 10 regions and two city administrations, with delays in Tigray and Amhara regions due to conflicts. Just finished watching Ethiopia’s report on the implementation of recommendations made during the 3rd Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the 47th UPR session of the UPR Working Group on November 12, 2024. the review process will continue until Friday, November 15, 2024. Here is a summary of recommendations made by States for Ethiopia to consider: -Enact comprehensive legislation on the crime of torture in line with the International Convention Against Torture. -Abolish the death penalty. -Ensure prompt and impartial investigation of the excessive use of force by police and security forces, holding those responsible accountable. -Extend invitation to all UN Special Procedure mandate holders and give them unhindered access in the country. -Ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. -Ensure accountability for the international human rights and international humanitarian law violations in the country.  -Address the unlawful detention of journalists and human rights defenders. -Establish mechanisms to support survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). -Extend invitation to the UN special human rights mandate holders and provide them unhindered access in the country. -Fully implement the recommendations of the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia. -Consider ratifying the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. -Resolve internal conflicts in the country with genuine political commitment. -Implement sustainable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
