In 2024, Africa’s political landscape is being reshaped not just by elections but by the rampant spread of disinformation. As voters in countries like Namibia, Botswana, and Mozambique prepare to cast their ballots, they are bombarded with waves of falsehoods designed to exploit ethnic and political tensions. The rise of artificial intelligence has made it easier for malicious actors to create hyper-realistic fake content, further confusing voters and eroding trust in democratic institutions. This issue of Africa in Fact explores the far-reaching consequences of misinformation, particularly in regions already beset by conflict, as seen in Mozambique’s insurgent-hit Cabo Delgado region. To combat this growing threat, the magazine calls for a collective effort to strengthen electoral institutions, promote digital literacy, and hold social media companies accountable for their role in spreading false information.
