🧠 👉Parkinson's disease can be misunderstood by those unfamiliar with it, leading to stigma and unfair discrimination against affected individuals. Increased awareness can help dispel myths and promote understanding and acceptance. ❗Increased awareness can lead to advocacy efforts aimed at improving access to healthcare, medications, and support services for individuals living with Parkinson's disease. #Parkinsonsdiseaseawareness

This is definitely worth reposting. Why? Because when professionals in the medical and pharma fields scroll through their LinkedIn feed—catching up on conferences, leadership workshops, or job changes—I hope they take a moment to read this. It’s a glimpse into the daily reality of a Young-onset Parkinson's patient. I'm 42 years old, and it’s 7:30 AM. I've already taken 5 pills just to manage my Parkinson’s symptoms and start my day. By the time the day is over, I’ll have taken 16. After getting my kids off to school, I’ll work for about an hour, but then I’ll have to stop to work out. It might sound like a luxury, but for me, it’s a necessity. Exercise is one of the few things that might slow the progression of my disease. At 11 AM, it’s time for 4 more pills, then I dive back into work—juggling my job and my advocacy efforts—until around 2 PM, when exhaustion hits. A lack of sleep and constant movement force me to take a nap just to get through the day. By 3 PM, I’m taking 4 more pills. By this point, I’m often dealing with dyskinesia (involuntary movements) from my medication, making simple tasks like preparing a meal difficult. As the evening wears on, bradykinesia (slowness of movement) sets in, making every movement feel like it’s happening in slow motion. At 7 PM, I take 2 more pills and by 7:30, the medication kicks in. It’s time to “relax” with my family, though I’m rarely still. Finally, at 10 PM, I take one last extended-release pill to get me through the night—hoping it lasts until morning, though I often wake up at 1 or 3 AM needing another dose before I can sleep again. And this is all assuming I didn’t forget to bring my pill pack with me or that it’s just an average day. If I’m recording podcasts, have meetings, or do anything out of the ordinary, I’m often dyskinetic and rigid almost the entire day, with my pills giving me little relief from the “extra” symptoms that surge. Why did I just spill the summary of my day on LinkedIn, a professional social media site? Well, it’s not for pity. I’m sharing it to push for change. As a Marketing professional, I'm also a patient—a patient who doesn’t know how I got Parkinson’s and is dealing with the fact that there’s no cure yet. I want my professional network in medicine and pharma to understand my patient experience. After all, it’s all about the patients, right? Well this patient is ready to experience something other than 16 pills (and more is in my future) that only cover a handful of motor symptoms (I didn't even dive into the list of non-motor symptoms) and with the side effect of having involuntary movements all day. This is just one story among millions in the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease group. Many others have it far worse. We need to figure something out. #parkinsons #parkinsonsawareness #5KforJK #thesecretlifeofpd #pharma #DBS
As I was waiting to fall asleep the other night it got me thinking about how much waiting we do living with Parkinson’s. But as we wait, we still do our best to get on with life as quickly as possible.
