#DOT Stories | State Departments of #Transportation have the enormous job of ensuring safe, efficient, and resilient transportation infrastructure statewide. Today, we're highlighting some of our favorite stories of DOTs using big data to get ahead of their state's biggest #mobility challenges. Read below to see how Georgia Department of Transportation is using real-time traffic data to minimize disruptions from #construction on one of its busiest #highway interchanges. Next, see how Caltrans used O-D and volume data to understand why trucks were cutting through residential neighborhoods, and coordinate with local agencies to keep them on safer, more efficient #freight routes. Last but not least, Nevada Department of Transportation won #NEVI funding with a data-driven grant application that will help them install equitable #EVcharging infrastructure on regional connectors throughout the state.

I shared some thoughts about transport decarbonisation and my zig-zaggy career with Georgia Corr from the Transport Planning Society to mark #TPDay2024 https://lnkd.in/ewFjZEVB. I squeezed in shout-outs to Susan Leadbetter, Maya Mistry and Podaris. tl,dr: plan for freedom and make the world a bit better, one cycle lane, tram extension and new station at a time. #cliched_but_true #TPS #TransportPlanning

Note: The comment period has ended for the draft connects2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan, the draft 2025-2028 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and the Air Quality Conformity Analysis (AQCA) Report. We will not be recording any further replies. Thanks to all who participated! When it comes to highway and road safety, we are not working alone! In our upcoming connects2050 transportation plan, we outline how we will work with PennDOT to use their existing safety tools. The Highway Network Screening Tool tells us what intersections and stretches of road have the most crashes. It also provides recommended changes for these areas. We can use this information when making decisions about where to direct our transportation funds. During the implementation of the plan, we will continue to work closely with PennDOT to make the best use of our shared resources. Give us your thoughts about working with PennDOT in the comments below - we will record it as part of the official review. You can also Read the full plan and comment here: https://lnkd.in/eZcnY6qz

Congratulations to the City of Detroit, one of our #USDOT #ThrivingCommunities on two exciting grant wins for over $88.9 Million! EPA Clean Ports The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority has been selected to receive an anticipated $21,905,782 to initiate the transition to a zero-emission future for the Port of Detroit in Michigan. The proposed project includes the acquisition and deployment of battery-electric cargo handling equipment, vessels, railcar movers, charging equipment, and solar arrays to support the electricity needs of the new equipment. The project also includes the scrappage of diesel cargo handling equipment, a vessel, and a railcar mover to reduce air pollution at the port and in the surrounding area. As part of this project, the applicant plans to develop a stakeholder engagement plan to facilitate community engagement and a guidebook for workforce development. CRISI: In Michigan, more than $67 million will be invested in Detroit RECHARGED - Realizing Environmental Changes Happening Around Railroads Generating Equitable Development, which will improve and expand the Livernois Intermodal Facility by installing approximately 17,200 feet of new track and upgrading paving as well replacing diesel gantry cranes with new hybrid and fully electric gantry cranes in Detroit and Wayne County, Michigan. The project will benefit local business owners and surrounding residents by improving service performance, enhancing multimodal connections, and reducing negative environmental impacts. The RAIB team (The Ray Highway, Arcadis, InfraStrategies LLC, Beverly A. Scott, Ph.D.) was happy to support you on these applications! #funding #grants #ports #rail #sustainability #zeroemission #buildthefuture

Traffic on point! Here are 4 formulas transportation engineers use daily: Speed (v) = d / t: The classic - calculates average speed (v) based on distance (d) and travel time (t). #BasicButEssential Level of Service (LOS): A qualitative measure of traffic congestion (A = free flow, F = gridlock). Use: Design roads, evaluate intersection performance, plan for future traffic growth. Capacity (C) = v * k * w: Finds the maximum number of vehicles a road can handle (C) based on speed (v), lane factor (k), and lane width (w). Use: Determine road capacity for different scenarios. Travel Demand Forecasting (D = f(population, income, land use)): Predicts future traffic demand (D) based on factors like population growth and land development. Use: Plan infrastructure needs, optimize public transportation systems. #TransportationEngineering #TrafficFlow

ANALYSIS: WOW JUST BUILT A TRANSIT SYSTEM. You know Friday, Aug 30th, Sound Transit will be opening a new light rail station in Lynnwood, Washington. You know, below is a photo of the original proposal for Bus Rapid Transit in 1983. That is right, Senator Pete Domenci from New Mexico was a big help. What I proposed was putting in bus lanes on the major streets, and run express from Transit Center to Transit Centers, and have real live transit stations, not just bus stops. It got built. This was my Masters Thesis at UNM, where I proposed a bus express system for Albuquerque Rapid Transit. Wow, I just built a transit system.

As Chair of #NCTD, I’m excited to share that the North County Transit District has been awarded a $10.2 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (aka: RAISE) program. This dedicated funding will be used to obtain environmental clearance and complete preliminary engineering for the east segment of the SPRINTER Corridor Service Improvement Project. The Project will construct 9.5 miles of double track along NCTD’s SPRINTER hybrid rail corridor which connects the cities of Escondido and San Marcos. This is a major milestone in the District’s effort to improve SPRINTER service frequency from 30-minutes to 15-minutes. Once completed, this project will add to the convenience of taking transit in North County by improving access to major regional employment centers, educational institutions, health care providers and other essential destinations. Improved service frequency encourages more people to get out of their cars and on to transit which will in turn improve air quality and reduce congestion on adjacent roadways. It’s a win-win. In addition to supporting #Sprinter hybrid passenger rail service, the SPRINTER Corridor also supports BNSF freight services. Double tracking will enable freight services to increase frequencies, enhancing the movement of goods and supporting an efficient supply chain in southern California. This grant from the U.S. DOT builds upon funding the District has already received from Congressman Mike Levin and the FTA to modernize SPRINTER signal infrastructure. This combination of signal modernization and double tracking, will enhance public transit in North San Diego County, strengthen our region’s transportation infrastructure and economy and improve our air quality. Quite a package! #GoNCTD #PublicTransit

Update for the I-4 Corridor Today, June 14th, the Sun Coast Transportation Planning Alliance and Central Florida MPO Alliance will discuss expanding passenger rail service along the I-4 corridor to tackle our region’s rapid growth and traffic. This resolution supports adding Brightline's new rail line and boosting Amtrak services between Tampa Bay and Orlando. Despite past funding challenges, the vision for a connected super-region stays strong. Governor DeSantis plans to reserve space on I-4 for train service, but state grants won’t directly support Brightline. Orlando officials are also working on expanding SunRail to key spots, which could cost over $4 billion. This effort ties in with FDOT's $2.4 billion project to improve I-4 over the next 10 years. With the right planning and investment, we can create safe, reliable, and efficient transportation options to support our growing population and economy. Ill report back with updates as they are released. #TampaBay #Orlando #Transportation #Brightline #Amtrak #SunRail #I4Corridor #FDOT #Infrastructure #RealEstate
