I recently had the opportunity to attend both a Harlem Globetrotters show and a Dude Perfect performance in Kansas City, and the contrast between the two experiences was striking. While the Globetrotters have been entertaining audiences with their unique blend of basketball skills and showmanship for nearly a century, their recent performance felt dated and lackluster compared to the high-energy, engaging show put on by Dude Perfect. Despite the Globetrotters' incredible legacy, it's clear that they're struggling to keep up with the changing tastes and expectations of modern audiences. Dude Perfect's ability to sell twice as many seats as the Globetrotters is a testament to the power of innovation and adaptability in the entertainment industry. As leaders, it's easy to become complacent when you've built a successful brand over many years. After all, every dollar we make is a reason not to change anything. And the Globetrotters have a lot of reasons to keep things as they are. However, in today's rapidly evolving entertainment landscape, even the most iconic institutions must adapt to stay relevant. If the Harlem Globetrotters want to continue inspiring and entertaining audiences for another 100 years, they must be willing to embrace change and update their approach. In my keynotes, I often talk about the need to reimagine how we deliver our services. To literally start with a blank sheet of paper and imagine version 2.0 vs. making incremental improvements. For instance, I strongly feel that the game between the Globetrotters and the Generals should be a real game vs a fake one. And perhaps there are consequences or bonuses based on who actually wins.
