As a consultant who works primarily with tech clients, I’m deeply invested in the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Recently, the closures of key organizations like Girls in Tech, Women Who Code, and Code Nation have highlighted a silent crisis that we cannot ignore. These organizations were vital in providing support, mentorship, and resources to women and minorities in STEM. Their absence leaves a void that underscores the persistent challenges we face in achieving true diversity and inclusion. In my latest article, I delve into: • The systemic issues contributing to the shutdowns • The cultural and financial barriers women in STEM encounter • The broader implications of a lack of diversity in our industry I also discuss actionable steps we can take to support existing DEI initiatives and create a more inclusive environment. So excited to share a video I made with The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on exploring gender differences in Python Coding style! This study is from my The Leverhulme Trust Fellowship on how gender affects the development of technology! 🔐 You can read the full (Open Access) paper here: https://lnkd.in/everKgyu In this project I examine gender differences in Python programming on GitHub, challenging common assumptions about the underrepresentation of women in open-source software. Often attributed to perceived differences in technical ability, women's participation in open-source coding communities is frequently questioned. In contrast, my study approaches Python code as a form of communication, analyzing 1,728 open-source projects to investigate whether gender plays a role in coding quality and style. The results reveal notable gender differences in how Python files are structured, yet no differences in overall code quality. This study ultimately concludes that while there are gendered variations in Python programming style, these differences do not affect the quality of the code itself, refuting the notion that technical ability differs along gender lines!
