How do we prepare young people for a world where AI is everywhere? As we talked about in our panel yesterday as part of Australias AI Month - AI is transforming the way we learn, work, live, and relate to one another. This is both a risk and an opportunity. But here’s the real challenge: our younger generations are growing up with AI as a constant presence, and they don’t have the life experience to compare it to a pre-AI world. This means they are more prone to assume AI “knows best” or even mistake its responses for genuine emotions. I talk about ethical AI and AI ethics (not quite the same thing but that’s a post for another time) A LOT. Just this week, I also spoke with students at Western Sydney University about the crossroads we find ourselves at - and how we can hope to become conscious consumers and therefore choose the path with more positive outcomes. The Risks 🔴 Anthropomorphising AI: Many young people see AI as having feelings. Adults can dismiss this, but kids may not. Particularly as these tools become more and more voice based. 🔴 Blind Trust in AI: Without life experience, young people might accept AI outputs as fact without questioning accuracy or bias. 🔴 Equity Gaps: Not everyone has the same access to technology or tools, widening educational and social divides. The Opportunities ✅ Critical Thinking Skills: Teaching young people to ask, “Does this AI output make sense? Is it accurate? What’s missing?” ✅ Ethics in Action: Embedding ethical discussions into education ensures students learn not just how to use AI, but also when and why. ✅ Global Problem Solving: I truly believe AI can be a great amplifier - and because of this, could help bright young minds actualise their amazing ideas. AI could help kids tackle issues like climate change or inequality by giving them tools to innovate. As I often say, “AI is a tool, not a solution. We must teach young people how to use it responsibly and critically.” How Do We Support Young People? Here’s how we can equip them: 1️⃣ Teach foundational AI literacy: What is AI? How does it work? Where does it get its answers? 2️⃣ Build critical assessment skills: Help students analyse AI outputs and spot biases. 3️⃣ Start conversations about ethics: Include discussions about fairness, transparency, and societal impact. 4️⃣ Make it inclusive: Address the equity gaps and ensure all students have access to these learning opportunities. Responsible AI Index - Australia 2024 Recently, Fifth Quadrant, sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources through the National AI Centre launched the latest annual report on Australia's maturity with regard to Responsible AI. Myself and the team at Fifth Quadrant started measuring Australia's progress with regard to Responsible AI in 2021 and we are delighted that the National AI Centre and the Minister's office have continued to support the research. Key results for 2024 are: 413 respondents - Australian based organisations Australia scored 44/100 indicating we are at the 'Developing' stage of maturity but not yet 'Implementing' or 'Leading'. Organisations in the Leading segment are more likely to have business leaders (CEOs, Board Members, Owners) driving AI strategy, ensuring strategic oversight and accountability (54% vs 34%). Two thirds of organisations are aware of Australia’s AI Ethics Principles. This awareness increases from 45% in the Emerging segment to 94% in the Leading group. This high level of awareness, especially among more mature organisations, indicates that the efforts by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources to promote these principles are having a significant impact. The gap between those organisations that are aware of the Ethical Principles (78%) and those who have implemented practices related to the Ethical Principles (29%) is a staggering 49 points. Nor great. This gap underscores the need for organisations to move beyond mere awareness and to actively implement robust RAI practices to align with ethical principles effectively. Addressing these gaps is crucial for building trust, ensuring ethical AI deployment, and achieving long-term sustainability in AI initiatives. 27% of respondents noted that AI provides a strong competitive advantage; 52% noted that AI provides a slight competitive advantage; and 20% noted that AI was neither a competitive advantage or disadvantage. These results indicate that not only is Australia slow in its uptake of AI but it lags in its implementation of Responsible AI. There is much more to do which needs to be a National priority. Australia's National AI Centre has been delivering some great work in recent months, and yesterday's publication of the AI Impact Navigator (in collab with CSIRO's Data61) is no different. The AI Impact Navigator is designed to help Australian organisations assess, implement, manage, and report on the impact of their AI systems. It helps shift the focus from just internal AI governance mechanisms, to publicly reporting on the tangible outcomes that AI delivers. It does this by operating across four dimensions: ⚫Effective AI and community impact—aligning AI efforts with community interests. ⚫Customer experience and consumer rights—balancing innovation with privacy and fairness. ⚫Workforce and productivity—managing automation impacts and upskilling staff. ⚫Social licence and corporate transparency—ensuring responsible AI practices and environmental sustainability. The navigator advocates a commitment to continuous improvement with AI system impact and performance using a "Plan, Act, Adapt" model. I think that's fairly aligned with the ISO 42001 AI management systems standard, which has a "Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA)" framework and has been strongly embraced in the recent Voluntary AI Safety Standard. My take? 🟢The Voluntary AI Safety Standard is focused on regulatory preparation and compliance, offering prescriptive steps like governance frameworks, risk assessments, and monitoring. 🟢The AI Impact Navigator is impact-driven and directs attention to real-world adoption, transparency, and stakeholder trust. So, read both the 'Voluntary AI Safety Standard' and the 'AI Impact Navigator', as well as the recent Australian Government 'Policy for responsible use of AI in gov' and the 'National framework for assurance of AI in gov'... and you've basically got yourself caught up with where Australia's headed in terms of AI regulation, governance and broad strategic best practice in just four documents. I'm preparing to teach a number of guest lectures on data, signal, and wisdom at Canberra University over the next couple of months for a course. Nice to be able to reflect on my understanding of the space, and practice expressing it with clarity. Here's the essence of it so far - We seek signals in data to construct and calibrate our models of the world. We can call a useful model, knowledge. Over time, the ongoing use of signals to calibrate and refine a model can result in a sufficiently complex model that takes into account everything that needs to be accounted for. This is wisdom.

Resilience gets tossed around as a buzzword everywhere these days, and just like everyone else, I want to make sure I have that too, right? Last week, I took a short course #LearnToLead2024 on resilience at AGSM @ UNSW Business School, and it was a refreshing dive into different themes—personal, workplace, and even wider economic resilience. Some insights really stuck with me, and I thought I'd share (especially the bit on economic resilience was quite comforting for my GenZ brain 🤯). 💭 Personal Resilience and Emotional Regulation 🔸 We construct our emotions: According to Lisa Feldman Barrett's Theory of Constructed Emotion, our brains create emotions based on our body's state, external events, past experiences, and cultural understanding 🧠✨ It means we have more control over how we feel than we might think.  🔸 Regulating emotions is a process: Using strategies like situation selection, cognitive reappraisal, and attentional deployment can help manage stress effectively. It’s not about suppressing emotions but understanding and managing them. 🛠️💪 🌍 Economic Resilience with Prof. Richard Holden 🔸 Global supply chains are evolving: The shift from Just-in-Time to Just-in-Case post COVID reflects how companies are prioritizing adaptability over pure efficiency. 🔸 The Hold-up Problem: This fascinating concept explains inefficiencies that arise from dependencies in business relationships. Do we contract it out or vertically integrate it? Think international trade and supply chains—so relevant in today’s world! 🌏 Make in Australia or Make in China? But here’s the catch: moving away from globalization isn’t the solution. Without global trade, everyone loses—efficiency, innovation, and economic growth all take a hit. 🌐 🔸 Productivity and an aging society: With 20% of Australians set to be over 65 by 2060, fewer workers will need to support more retirees. Tackling this means increasing productivity through R&D, upskilling, and AI while balancing immigration and smarter tax policies. 👴🤖 📈 Economic Resilience with Prof. Justin Wolfers 🔸 Substitutability fosters resilience: Our ability to adapt and find alternatives when traditional paths are blocked is what keeps economies moving. COVID reminded us of this in ways we’ll never forget. 💡🌟  🔸 Optimism in uncertainty: Despite all the doom and gloom in headlines 📰, our economy’s history proves its incredible ability to bounce back. Interesting review of AI adoption and the level of maturity of use cases. Australia is still quite early in the journey. Who are the top paying companies in Australia for jobs in the data field? 📈 Only the Government/ATO truly knows. However, I was curious so dug into a publicly available Kaggle dataset, focusing on the big 3: Data Scientist, Data Analyst, and Data Engineer roles. This covers over 800 jobs from 125 companies. It was an incredible honor to return to my university at Western Sydney University today and participate in “Chat with Insiders - Essential Traits for Workplace Success.” Collaboration With WESTERN VISA - Vietnamese International Student Association at Western Sydney University and hosted by Launch Pad - Western Sydney University. As a student, I always attended these events to get inspired and learn valuable lessons. Being invited to share my experiences and insights felt surreal—a true pinch-me moment! During the event, I was asked to share three personal traits that have significantly contributed to my journey: 1. Being Goal-Oriented: • Setting clear and achievable goals has always been a cornerstone of my approach. It provides direction and purpose, ensuring that every step I take aligns with my broader vision. This trait helps in breaking down complex tasks into manageable actions, allowing for steady progress and measurable achievements. • In the workplace, being goal-oriented means prioritizing tasks effectively, staying motivated, and continuously striving for improvement. It fosters a proactive attitude, ensuring that I am always looking for ways to contribute to the organization’s success while also advancing my personal and professional development. 2. Being Resilient: • Resilience is the ability to adapt and bounce back from setbacks. Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous challenges and obstacles. Embracing resilience allowed me to maintain a positive outlook, learn from failures, and persist despite difficulties. • In a professional setting, resilience is crucial for navigating the inevitable ups and downs. It enables one to handle stress, remain focused under pressure, and approach problems with a solution-oriented mindset. It demonstrates professionalism, enhances efficiency, and builds trust with clients and colleagues. The Reddit Sentiment Analysis Tool, developed by our Bachelor of Data Science student Anh Nguyen and our Associate Professor Dr Nicolas Hamelin, does just that.
