As we step into 2024, the landscape of education is undergoing a major transformation. The focus - mental well-being, innovative curriculums, and preparing students for a tech-oriented future. Reports suggest a substantial rise in depression and job-related stress amongst educators. Simultaneously, there is a noticeable shift towards initiatives such as anti-bullying campaigns and phone-free spaces in schools. As we adapt to this technological era, the incorporation of problem-solving, communication, and creativity is evident. Fields like computer science and STEM are being integrated into the traditional curriculum. The educational approach is becoming more personalized and engaging. The growth of esports is just one example of engaging STEM-based learning activities. Moreover, our traditional education is veering towards diversification beyond four-year universities, and towards partnerships with technical colleges or businesses. Finally, the perspective towards higher education is also evolving. Despite challenges like public trust and financial hurdles, areas of growth have emerged like the outcomes era, leadership crisis, and the integration of AI into the educational system. What do you see as disruptors to the future of education? ⚡ 📚 On the weekend I had the pleasure of joining Albert Park College for their staff offsite retreat in Victoria. I shared with them some of the defining characteristics of the next generation, as well as this slide about the disruptors shaping the future of education. According to our survey of teachers, teacher burnout and attracting and retaining the next generation of teachers are at the forefront of the disruptors set to face the sector. A career in education was once considered a very flexible career pathway. It doesn't seem to be viewed in the same way since the pandemic. Of course this isn't the only factor to this teacher challenge, but I think it's part of it. Now, yes, this is a survey of teachers so it makes sense that these items top the list. But, it's interesting to note they did beat out the other responses listed here, as well as changing students expectations, integration of AI, online delivery of education, navigating student gender identities and the deregulation of curriculum. A fascinating insight from our 2023 study into the disruptors impacting the future of education. We're underway with the 2024 edition of the research. HOW CAN WE MAKE EDUCATION BETTER? To quote one of my greatest heroes, the late Sir Ken Robinson: “The fact is that given the challenges we face; education doesn’t need to be reformed — it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.” I can't agree more. To personalize it. To create the conditions in which children can discover their own individual strengths and talents. To not standardize anymore which means to cause (something or in this case, children) to CONFORM to a standard. We want CREATIVITY to flourish! This standardization of education truly has robbed many students of their creativity and of what makes them unique. Many of us on this journey of working to improve education have known this for years - and our path has been wrought with obstacles and opposition. Old systems - traditions - habits - ways of doing things - are not easy to change. But we are seeing progress. New technologies are certainly a big part of that, but changing peoples MINDSET is the most important part of our trek. As with anything new, it is the small, rag-tag group of EVANGELISTS out there creating new disciples each day - relentlessly working towards the end goal: TRANSFORMATION. Step-by-step & day-by-day - we are seeing a difference. The most important part of this process is to personalize - individualize - recognize - each student's uniqueness, creativity and learning style. Using technology such as AI and VR offer amazing tools to help with these things in ways that no other technology has been able to do - for all students and all learning styles. All students deserve the opportunity to THRIVE and a RELEVANT education.
