COACHES, ARE YOU MASTERING THE MENTAL GAME FOR ATHLETIC SUCCESS? As athletes, we spend countless hours refining our physical skills—technique, endurance, and game strategy. But the truth is, the difference between a good player and a truly exceptional one isn’t just physical; it’s mental! Many athletes, even at the highest levels, battle with self-doubt, pressure, and internal dialogue that holds them back. It’s not enough to focus on technical skills alone—mental resilience must also be trained. Imagine a coach asking, "How do you feel when you miss?" or, "What makes you passionate about this sport?" These questions open the door to understanding an athlete’s mindset, helping them tap into their motivation and navigate the inevitable struggles that come with competition. However, most of the time, coaching stays on the surface, focusing solely on technique. As coaches, we need to challenge this approach. Technical training is important, but the mental game is where champions are made. Organizations should prioritize mindset training, equipping athletes with tools to manage stress, handle failure, and maintain focus. Without mental resilience, even the most skilled player can falter under pressure. Working on the mental aspect helps the head coach too. When coaches understand an athlete’s mindset, they can adjust strategies, positions, and training practices more effectively. Recognizing how athletes feel mentally can guide everything from tactical decisions to creating the right training environment. Sometimes, it’s just as important for a coach to acknowledge effort: "Well done! It was a great training session. You all did your best, and I’m proud of you! Keep pushing!" These moments build trust and reinforce a positive mental framework, driving performance and unity within the team. Coaches…10 quick tips for you: 1. To control the game…you need players who can take control of themselves… 2. To play front-foot…energy forward…with intent…you and your players need to be willing to accept mistakes 3. Attention is the relay station for player decision-making and self-control…help players to flex attention by asking them to feedback about what they were attending to 4. Perhaps the biggest killer in the game are ANTs…Automatic Negative Thoughts 5. Performance emotions are either helpful or unhelpful. Intelligent players are able to tell which…very quickly! 6. Enjoyment and seriousness are on two different continuums and can be experienced simultaneously 7. Session design is a vital psychological tool - disseminate between: -practice to perform -practice to learn -practice to maintain 8. Inject psycho-social tools into your sessions. Huddles for teamwork and leadership. Player-led questions during water breaks for player-driven shared mental models 9. Neither autonomy-supportive or controlled coaching is correct. Both are important depending on context 10. Have players experiment with energised self-talk to improve their ability to increase feelings of mental activation

past-PRESENT-future Our beliefs shape how we see the world. But sometimes, these beliefs hold us back. They're like invisible chains, stopping us from reaching our full potential. However, when we recognize and let go of these limiting beliefs, amazing things can happen. First, we need to be aware of these beliefs. It's like turning on a light in a dark room – we can finally see what's been holding us back. Once we see them clearly, we can start to break free from their grip. The ego plays a big part in this. It's like a voice from the past, telling us we can't change or grow. But we don't have to listen to it. We can choose to focus on the present and create a new story for ourselves. Letting go of limiting beliefs isn't easy, but it's worth it. It's about believing in ourselves and our potential. As we do this, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and experiences. By letting go of limiting beliefs, we set ourselves free. We become the authors of our own lives, ready to embrace all the opportunities that come our way. Seeking help from a personal coach can be incredibly useful in several ways: →Objective Perspective: A personal coach provides an outside perspective, offering insights and observations that we may not see ourselves. They can identify patterns, behaviors, and beliefs that may be limiting our potential. →Accountability: A coach helps keep us accountable for our actions and goals. Level up your Game with Mental Training! Top athletes know that success isn't just about physical skills. Just like you train your body, you can train your mind to perform at its peak. Here's one of the many techniques they implement: intentional training! Intentional training goes beyond drills. It's about deliberately working on skills or techniques that can be both physical and mental like: focus, emotional control, ball handling skills, or perfecting a new guard pass. Reflecting after a game or match to identify what worked well and use visualization techniques to rehearse a winning performance can help guide your training. How This Helps Athletes Improve: Targeted Skill Development: Intentional training allows athletes to target specific skills that might be hindering their performance. For example, an athlete struggling with pre-competition anxiety could use reflection to identify triggers and develop coping mechanisms.
