“Trusting the Process: The Unfolding Journey of Creation” One of the most frequent questions I hear is, ‘How long does it take to complete a painting?’ It’s never a straightforward answer. The journey starts long before the brush meets the canvas. It begins with weeks—sometimes months—of visualising, reflecting, and feeling out the movement and emotion I want to capture. The physical process itself is a layering of ideas and emotions, with each layer bringing new depth and complexity. What you see in the final piece is only the surface—beneath it lies a foundation built from countless moments of thought and action. Some might feel it’s a shame to cover up those earlier stages, but to me, that’s where the real essence lies. Here’s a very short video sharing just the tip of the iceberg of the process for my latest commissioned piece. This only shows about half of the full picture, with many more steps yet to unfold. It’s a reminder that, just like in life and work, the visible result is often supported by invisible layers of time, effort, and experience. The process, though not always seen, is what makes the end result meaningful. Life’s Complexities: Double Sided 2024, mixed media painting on glass, 24 in. x 36 in. For the past six months, I’ve been creating a series of double-sided portraits that delve into life’s complexities—how we face challenges that shake everything we once believed, leaving us questioning what we thought we knew. This series invites us to pause and reflect on the fact that life is never one-dimensional. We all encounter obstacles that challenge our beliefs, pushing us to reconsider what we’ve held as truth. It’s in these moments of doubt that we truly come to understand what it means to be alive. As an empath, I’m deeply drawn to exploring the human condition—especially those raw, vulnerable moments where we’re forced to confront the uncertainty and contradictions that make us who we are. To me, it’s in those moments that we become our truest, most authentic selves, and that’s a beautiful thing. The paintings reflect personal challenges I’ve faced around topics like religion, hookup culture, and maturity—experiences that are universal for many of us. For the first time, I painted on glass, creating double-sided self-portraits that represent how opposing views within the human condition are seen externally, while the internal struggles are unveiled through mixed media and personal memorabilia between the glass layers. The transparency of the work invites viewers from both sides to engage in a conversation, recognizing that while each experience is unique, we are never truly alone in our struggles. By sharing these personal battles, I hope to inspire reflection on the complexities of being human—encouraging us all to embrace uncertainty and vulnerability. It’s okay to struggle. It’s okay to question. It’s okay to be uncertain. These are simply parts of the human experience.
