Do you know what a reasonable adjustment is? ✨ A reasonable adjustment is a change or improvement an employer can make to reduce the impact of a disability. A reasonable adjustment is bespoke and specific to each individual and can include any of the following: 🥰 Changing the lighting above an individual's desk. 🥰 Flexibility in working hours to accommodate a later or earlier start. 🥰 Providing an agenda in advance for a regular weekly meeting. 🥰 Purchasing a supportive desk chair, software or telephone. Now I don't like telling people what to do ( 🤥 ) but a reasonable adjustment is your duty as an employer under the Equality Act. If you employ an individual who informs you of their disability, it is your responsibility to have a discussion with this person and identify what they need to help them carry out their role. If the request is unreasonable? You don't have to agree to every request if it's looking to be too expensive or disruptive to the business, but you are required to consider each request and find a solution. Need to chat this over? 👋 📞 07341 432 479 📧 [email protected] #equality #reasonableadjustments #flexibility #fairness #equalityact #hr #hrsupport #retainedhrsupport #smes #smallbusinesshr

If you're an Aussie business struggling to find talent amidst the current labour shortage, I encourage you to read this report. APM's "The case for change" report is based on primary research, contrasting the perspectives of job seekers with disability against those of Australian employers, and includes 10 practical tips to help employers recruit and retain people with disability in their workforce. Some key take outs: 💡 The difference between equity and equality is not well understood and is creating perverse outcomes for disability employment 💡 Employment of people with disability remains primarily a values-based decision; the tangible benefits to business are less well known 💡 Many of the things that would help job seekers with disability perform their best at work would also benefit those without disability, indicating potential for action that generates broad, intersectional benefit to both employers and those in the labour market 💡 Positive workplace culture and psychological safety are essential foundational components of successful recruitment and retention of job seekers with disability. Where this is lacking, it drives disability non-disclosure, creating a barrier to inclusive workplaces We're grateful for the opportunity to continue supporting APM with this important body of work.

💼Neurodiversity in the workplace: Why it matters Does your definition of workplace diversity include disability? And does it go beyond physical disabilities to also include neurodiversity? The answer for most organisations is likely “no.” Studies estimate that the unemployment rate for neurodiverse adults runs as high as 30-40%. Why does it make sense for organisations to embrace neurodiversity in the workplace? 👉https://lnkd.in/gxG52qB9 #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #NeurodiversityWeek #NCW #ThisIsND

The truth is, only about 4.6% of employees self-identify as having a disability with their employers, which means there are likely many more individuals with disabilities or who are neurodivergent within your organization than you realize. Knowing this can help you set your teams up for success by creating an environment where all employees can thrive.
