Well, I'm just gonna say it. I find this ad extremely repulsive and uninspiring. I get the gist of it and I am well aware it's intentionally polarizing. Nike has done a great job at targeting people's aspirations to become the best version of themselves. It's been doing that for decades. But most of the time, they did it amazingly well. Arguably, Nike was one of the first companies to understand what brand selling proposition is about. And they keep cashing it in, big time. Nobody buys Nike activewear and sneakers because they care about quality. The actual materials and technologies are not that different from their competitors. The design's pretty good, though. But people buy Nike because there is a strong brand narrative of athletic excellence and elitism. If you're their customer, you're wearing the Nike symbol with pride because it signals your status and your values. "Just do it." Be the best or go home. Get up at 5 am. Work hard, hustle, it's lonely at the top... All that jazz. So, what's wrong with this ad? It's so boringly short-sighted. It's pushing a single definition of a winner who's a monomaniac and the opposite of a team player. Watch the ad a few times and you'll see it's incredibly exclusive. It demonizes winners while suggesting that "true winners" are inevitably going to be questioned morally. Oh, grow up. Ironically, Nike has some amazing athletes who are not single-minded but still brilliant and highly competitive. Yet they don't fit into this image of a winner. --- Am I really the only one who thinks this is just poor advertising? Or are you keeping your thoughts to yourself because you don't want to be excluded from the "winning" group? If you love the ad, can you explain why? Put it in words, I'm genuinely curious. My guess is that most people got a visceral reaction to the ad because it's well directed, and then got carried away without thinking about the message. However, even if you belong to Nike's target audience, you don't have to jump on a bandwagon and agree with everyone, or always be flabbergasted by Nike's ads. I mean, that's exactly what brands want because you'll spend more money and grow the feeling of attachment. But have you thought about how susceptible you are as a consumer? It's ok to stop and take a moment to think about the actual message here. You can dislike the ad and still wear your Nike's because they're cool. I know people are ready to say "well, if you don't get it, then you're not the target audience". Nah, I just think the ad misses the mark for the reasons I stated above. Plus, saying things like that leaves no room for a healthy debate. Or maybe good sportsmanship is for weaklings and I'm not a winner because WiNniNG iSn'T foR EveRyoNe.
Winning isn't for everyone. And Nikes knows it. That's why their newest ad is brilliant POV marketing. If this ad gives you chills (like it does for me) — Nike is for you. If it makes you cringe, roll your eyes, or check out — Great. Nike is fine with you buying Adidas, New Balance, or whatever instead. Because Nike is for winners and people who aspire to win. Here they tell you exactly what they're about. As a result, they attract the 'right' customers to them like an industrial magnet. And they're fine repelling others in the process. Because those are really "never gonna be clients anyways." Remember: → Average brands have a clear identity → Great brands have a beloved identity → Legendary brands become part of YOUR identity
