This Swedish phrase is an idiomatic expression meaning that there is no immediate danger, or need to worry. It is similar to the English phrase “There’s no cause for concern”. The imagery comes from a time when cows were vital to farming communities in rural Sweden and expresses the dangers of a cow walking on ice; i.e. if it was to fall through the ice, it would be a big problem because cows are large, heavy, expensive and difficult to rescue. Hè hè This expression from the Netherlands is often used to convey a sense of relief or satisfaction. In English we might say “oh finally" or “phew”, when we have been waiting for something to end. It is used both with the two sounds separated by a space and also as one word with no space. The words in Dutch are an example of reduplication - a linguistic morphological process in which the root, or stem of a word (or part of it) is repeated exactly, or with a very slight change. The first part is an interjection, often used to seek confirmation or attention. A little like the English language might use "eh?" or “hey?” The second "hè" doesn't add a new meaning, but intensifies the expression. Hèhè, het is weer droog! - Finally, it stopped raining! “Pūst pīlītes” is a Latvian idiom which literally translates as “to blow bubbles” in English, though in use the meaning is closer to wasting time, or doing something pointless, or unproductive. Blowing bubbles is a fleeting, temporary activity. “Pūst pīlītes” conveys the idea of engaging in something that doesn't have long-lasting value or importance, activities which are seen as trivial or not leading to any meaningful result. It can literally be translated as “to blow little ducks”, because “pīlītes” is the diminutive form of “pīles”, which means ducks. The “little ducks” is playful and whimsical, and best understood as “doing something insignificant”. This phrase can also be used to refer to telling lies, or exaggerating stories in a playful or lighthearted way. In English you might say someone is blowing smoke, or spinning stories which aren't entirely truthful; someone who is making things up, in a harmless or humorous manner.
