Cooperation mechanisms According to the organizers, the first annual conference of BRICS think tanks is designed to highlight the importance of cooperation among the research institutions of the BRICS countries in predicting the future and shaping economic and social policies, to build bridges of cooperation linking these countries, and to enhance their role in the multipolar international system. The participating analysts plan to discuss mechanisms for enhancing academic and intellectual cooperation among the BRICS countries. Particular attention will be paid to the role of the media in disseminating the researchers’ findings and expanding the scope of the dialogue on common issues within the BRICS group. The European Political Community (EPC) stands at a critical juncture, seeking to solidify its pivotal role in Europe's strategic dialogue and security cooperation. With the ongoing war in Ukraine, prioritizing security discussions has become imperative. Our academic think tank, the Global Policy Center (GPC), at IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs, has just published a policy brief analysing the key challenges to consolidating the EPC. Institutionalizing key aspects, such as appointing designated facilitators ("sherpas"), could significantly enhance the EPC's effectiveness in shaping the continent’s security architecture. The upcoming summit presents a crucial opportunity to reaffirm the UK's role, reengage Turkey, and designate future hosts. With five summits convened over the past two years, the EPC's relevance is increasingly evident. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to strengthen its role as Europe’s platform for strategic discussions. The report was developed with the expertise of several distinguished contributors, including Dr. İlke TOYGÜR, Director of the Global Policy Center and Professor of Geopolitics of Europe in the IE School of Politics, Economics, and Global Affairs at IE University, and Sébastien Maillard, Special Advisor from the Jacques Delors Institute. Additional participants included Luis de Lossada i Gallart, Cristina Vicente Ruiz, Manuel Muñiz, and Angel Alonso Arroba, along with representatives from Sciences Po and the Institut Jacques Delors. For an in-depth exploration of the EPC's path to consolidation, including insights from the IE's Global Policy Center (GPC), read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/dV58hT_H Jaime de Aguinaga Garcia, Juncal Sánchez Mendieta, Kerry Parke, ROSA ARANDA Barrio, Carlos Saldaña, Alejandra Carolina Acedo Samaniego, Iratxe Piñeiro Garate, Cristina Vicente Ruiz

Very happy to share my first academic article, co-written with Luis Simon for the Review of International Studies. In our piece, we challenge conventional scholarly wisdom and argue that, when responding to high-value hedgers, great powers tend to be quite accommodating. This is because they rather be "safe than sorry". Give it a read!
❗️New Research❗️ Really timely research under our European Research Council (ERC) project on Europe in US-China Rivalry! Luis Simon and Fabio Figiaconi explain why great powers often accommodate “high-value hedgers” in the Review of International Studies. A must-read. On the first day, Univ. -Prof. Dr. Wolfgang H. Schulz H. Schulz, along with his co-authors Oliver Franck and Vincent Geilenberg, presented their paper titled "Central Asia’s Growing Role as a Transport Corridor: Econometric Analysis of GDP and Freight Transport Growth and Implications for Global Trade and European Policy." Their study delves into the economic intricacies of Central Asia and the South Caucasus through comprehensive growth and transportation models. The findings provide invaluable insights for European and global policymakers, emphasizing the pivotal role of Central Asia as a crucial transport corridor. The session, focusing on Political Economy in Eurasia, was expertly chaired by Pauline Jones, Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan and the Edie N. Goldenberg Endowed Director for the Michigan in Washington Program. On Friday, Wolfgang H. Schulz chaired the session "Political Economy in Europe" and subsequently served as a discussant for the session "Development and the Environment." Dr. Annerose Tress and Henrik Kleis presented their paper titled "Re-Envisioning European Competitive Dynamics: Institutional Role Models in Driving Non-Discriminatory Collaborative Innovations for Road Network Digitization" on the final day of the conference. The paper highlights the major challenges of collaboration using the example of the #digitalroad. Complexity, trust, and synchronization problems are just a few of the issues addressed. The contribution of #IRM to solving these problems is outlined in our research. We gained valuable insights through engaging discussions. Thank you for the wonderful experience, MPSA - Midwest Political Science Association. #MPSA #PoliticalScience #ConferenceInsights #GlobalPolicy #CentralAsia #TransportCorridor Zeppelin University, Friedrichshafen

The text lists four proposals of intervention to support the R&I growth in the European Union: Prioritising investments and reforms, Improving access to excellence, Translating results into economic impact, and Deepening the European Research Area. «Europe is still far from achieving the target of 3% of EU GDP invested in research and development», writes the author, highlighting that investments in research and innovation have to be a benchmark for the prosperity of European society and economics. 👉 Read more at this link: https://lnkd.in/d99JccEs European Research Executive Agency (REA) #ORRI

📚 After the successful first #CAPIS high-level international conference, we continue our column with our members' publications. Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche, Giuridiche e Studi Internazionali - Università di Padova Laura Polverari, paolo graziano, Cristina Zerbinati, Cambridge University Press. (7/14) In their insightful article, "Studying Democracy in Europe: Conceptualization, Measurement, and Indices," Professor paolo graziano and Mario Quaranta tackle the intricate task of defining and measuring democracy across Europe. ✒️ Essential Insights to be considered: 1) Defining Democracy: Professor paolo graziano and Mario Quaranta delve into the multifaceted meanings of democracy, highlighting how ideological, political, and cultural contexts shape its definition in various European nations. 2) Essential Democratic Elements: The article emphasizes the importance of electoral competition, civil liberties, and the rule of law, while also discussing their varying significance across different democratic models. 3) Measuring Complexity: One of the major challenges in studying democracy is its inherent complexity. Professor paolo graziano discusses the methodological hurdles involved in selecting appropriate indicators and merging quantitative and qualitative methods. 4) Diversity in Governance: With Europe’s rich diversity in governmental structures and political cultures, creating a standardized measure of democracy proves nearly impossible. Graziano reviews various prominent democracy indices—like the Democracy Index, Freedom House Index, and Polity Project—comparing their criteria, scoring systems, and limitations. 5) Unique Perspectives: Each index offers a distinct lens on democracy, resulting in differing ratings for the same country. This highlights the need for a nuanced approach to understanding democratic practices. 6) Historical Influences: Professor paolo graziano and Mario Quaranta explore how historical trends and tendencies have shaped European democracies and discuss the European Union’s role in promoting democratic ideals while respecting national sovereignty. 7) A Call for Methodological Innovation: To truly grasp the state of democracy in Europe, Professor paolo graziano and Mario Quaranta advocate for a mixed-methods approach that combines statistical analysis with ethnographic fieldwork, capturing the richness and diversity of democratic governance. 💡Final Thoughts: Professor paolo graziano and Mario Quaranta conclude by appealing to scholars to collaborate in enhancing democratic indices and ensuring they reflect Europe's complex political tapestry. How can we better conceptualize and measure democracy in an increasingly diverse Europe? Let’s share our thoughts and ideas! 💬🇪🇺 The full article in open access: https://lnkd.in/dd46QQRA
