Today, I had the great pleasure of starting my day at the same time as Europe by participating in a roundtable on GovTech procurement. ☕️☕️☕️😊 Alongside Wojciech Janek and Viktor Nestulia we shared our expertise with #SmartCity and #GovTech European startups as part of the GovTech Connect initiative, driven by PUBLIC and their partners. We discussed bridging the gap to public contracts in Poland, Ukraine, and touched on the differences between EU and US procurement frameworks. Additionally, we explored the unique challenges faced by the public sector, particularly its inherent risk aversion. It should be intuitive—after all, we’re responsible for public funds and scrutinize every expenditure. However, public servants are equally eager to eliminate the repetitive, mundane tasks they’re still stuck with. A big thank you to Nazli Temur for raising the insightful question on the possibility of public administration transformation. This movement started in Europe about 10 years ago, and around that same time, we started the GovTech revolution to the Polish central government. When I speak of the GovTech revolution, I envision more than just administrative function; it's about reshaping public administration into a driving force for innovation, matching the pace of global development. Perhaps it's time we coined a new term, as “administration” often implies limitations. We need more Candocracy—a public sector driven by action and collaboration, rather than policy over-formalism. Also, Candocracy is a journey you can't take alone, because only together can we make truly great things happen. I really believe that Poland and Europe can maintain this momentum. With the brilliant minds of European startups, we can’t afford to slow down! This figure represents a decrease of around 44% compared to the previous month (in May European tech companies collected €10.6 billion). Five European cities have gathered in Barcelona for our Democracy Lab! 💡 Hosted by Eurocities and the City of Barcelona, this unique platform enables local government officials and democracy practitioners to collaborate, innovate, and tackle real-world challenges through democratic interventions. Here's a snapshot of the challenges our cities are bringing to the table today: 🇧🇬 Sofia: Implementation of civic tech as a strategic democratic measure in the city 🇵🇹 Cascais: AI in improvement of Cascais' Participatory Budget 🇳🇱 Rotterdam: Technology to increase citizens’ involvement in neighbourhood council elections 🇹🇷 Istanbul: Setting up a digital participation platform in a highly diverse, multicultural megacity 🇱🇹 Vilnius: The proficiency of senior citizens in navigating digital services and democratic participation Between September 17-19, small teams led by experienced facilitators will work on actionable solutions to these challenges, with the support of experts from the Nets4Dem network, local stakeholders, and Barcelona’s own team. Last week we announced that Sphereon.com has been selected by SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen (the German Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation) as one of the few companies to develop prototypes for the European Digital Identity Wallets (EUDI Wallets). This project will pioneer privacy-preserving, inclusive digital identity solutions across the EU.
