About us

Public service is a noble calling: to help others, to make our communities stronger, and to uphold the public trust. As city employees, we see the results of our hard work in our own community— in street and infrastructure improvements, new buildings rising from the ground, safer and more prosperous neighborhoods, and happier, healthier children, families, and senior citizens. We may all come from different backgrounds, but we are connected through our passion for service. What we do at work today, and everyday, shapes the Boston of tomorrow. Join us! My team is seeking a Communications and Design Intern who will join our nimble team of the civically curious. In particular, we’re eager to have the Communications and Design Intern support the storytelling of our work, to engage the public, and share the wins inside and outside of City Hall. We encourage exploration - the Intern will experiment with new digital and physical tools to craft engaging narratives. City of Boston See the post here for more information or to apply: https://lnkd.in/dtjvx3TE

Now, more than ever, the work of local government feels so important. I must admit, I have spent some time being angry about the way public servants have been villainized-- our jobs framed as wasteful spending, as fat to trim. For someone who has spent my career making local government work better for the people we serve, I can say these jobs are anything but. Every day, millions of public servants do almost every type of job imaginable. We help pave roads, ensure clean drinking water, protect municipal bond ratings, safeguard data from hackers, and innovate to make government systems work better. The public relies on public servants in ways that are visible, and in ways that are easy to take for granted. That's, in part, because most public servants aren't in it for the credit or the glory. It's also in part because we don't have giant marketing budgets to promote our work. I was so energized to spend an amazing day in DC with a group of people who understand the power of public service so deeply. I am so thankful for the work Work for America is doing in partnership with 60+ orgs that were at the Powering Public Service convening. I am grateful to be a part of this movement.

Executive Director @ Work for America

✨ Reflecting on an incredible day of collaboration at Powering Public Service! In partnership with National Governors Association, National League of Cities, and National Association of Counties, Work for America brought together 60+ organizations to tackle state and local government workforce challenges. The role of cities and states has never been more important, and it was so energizing to be in community with people deeply committed to supporting these governments. I left filled with “big ideas” and a sense of alignment on the core strategies the field needs to advance in the new year. We also heard stories that prove that real, impactful change *is* possible in government—and that the solutions are already emerging, such as: 👉 St. Louis modernizing its talent system in record time (Krizia Lopez) 👉 Boston applying people-centered management to public sector issues (Alex Lawrence) 👉 Orlando & LA County driving equity through innovative staffing models (Salman Akhtar) 👉 Rockdale County, GA expanding opportunities for justice-involved individuals (Toni Holmes) 👉 Alabama creating a skills-based talent marketplace (Amber Garrison Duncan, PhD) A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed their energy and expertise. This work is essential for ensuring that state and local governments—the backbone of our communities—can deliver the services we all depend on. We’re excited to keep the momentum going💡💪
