However, in some places the fight against dust and sand can be extremely complex, increasing maintenance costs. The most common method to remove dirt from photovoltaic modules employs, in fact, jets of water at high pressure, but is not feasible in areas with limited water and human resources such as deserts, mountains, and space. That’s why over the years the industry has churned out a wide list of anti-spig technologies. Innovative solutions such as electrodynamic screens (EDS). What is it? A transparent coating containing parallel electrodes generates electrodynamic forces to repel or move dust from the surface of the panels. Recent research has shown that an EDS can remove over 90% of the dust deposited on flat surfaces in minutes. Everything is perfect on paper, except that the electrodynamic screen to operate requires high-voltage electricity of alternating current type. Picking it from the same panels is an uninteresting option from the practical side to which an external source is much preferred. A concrete solution to renewable energy storage… Researchers at MIT have come up with a new way to store energy inside a modified concrete. It could be a concrete solution to renewable energy storage issues. The team turned a mix of water, cement, and carbon black, a highly conductive material used in the manufacturing of car tires, into a supercapacitor. Supercapacitors aren't as good at long-term energy storage compared to lithium-ion #batteries, but they can be charged and discharged very quickly. It is hoped that one day roads could be built using the carbon-cement supercapacitor to quickly charge cars wirelessly, reducing their reliance on conventional chargers. Another potential application could be to store energy in the walls and foundations of buildings that not only supports the structure, but also houses the energy needed to run them. Effectively, turning them into huge batteries. However, the #technology is still in its infancy, and the proof-of-concept supercapacitor can only store enough energy to power a 10-watt LED for 30 hours. Supercapacitors also have the tendency to discharge very quickly and are far less energy-dense than their lithium-ion counterparts. Imagine storing the energy from your home solar panels in the walls or foundations to be used at a later time.
