Last week, I posted about our bi-weekly Show & Tell at Petricore, and this week, I want to share another meeting we alternate with it - a News Discussion.
Years ago, I was diving deeper into XR (specifically MR/AR) as a space where our games could stand out. While we worked on numerous interesting AR client projects, our original games, mostly flatscreen, struggled to stand out in a really crowded space. One of Petricore’s core strengths is deep technical competence and embracing new tech challenges, so XR seemed like a natural fit. I was also really excited by the potential of designing games for mixed reality, and the unique challenges that would come with it.
But me just announcing "we’re doing this now" wouldn’t work without buy-in from the team, and truthfully I needed to dig in more myself. Monty Sharma, suggested we create a space for team discussions on emerging trends. That’s how our Articles Sharing meeting began. Every other week, following our all-hands, the team shares articles or insights they've encountered, which we then discuss together.
Some of the most helpful things we gained from this has been:
Diversity of Information
People brought everything from Reddit posts and Twitter clips of MR titles to research papers on Gaussian slats and articles on business trends. This broad range of sources, all focused on emerging tech, made us better informed as a team.
Informed Design
This knowledge helped inform the design decisions we made when first prototyping Mythic Realms. We discussed the rumors of new technologies coming, and the anticipated rise of MR on headsets like Quest 3 and AVP (neither of which had been announced yet.) We were able to design for future technologies, by reading about and understanding better what technology was coming, versus what currently existed.
Team Buy-In
Lastly, this helped solve my concern of team buy in. People who maybe were a bit more XR skeptical started seeing some of the same data that I found compelling. We all were looking at and becoming excited by this information together, and it helped gain momentum within the company that XR was a compelling path for us to go down.
I think any company that is working in emerging tech, needs to dedicate some time for everyone on the team to be reading and better informed about those technologies. Making that time dedicated and group discussion focused helps get everyone thinking about it more deeply.
Lastly, while my goal was to convince the team, I was also open to convincing myself otherwise. We share articles about the more concerning sides of XR in addition to the good, and keep our eyes/ears open to everything going on in the space. I don't think you can approach this planning to build a company echo chamber, and it's important that concerns are openly discussed for this to work properly.
