🌍 Work with a System, Not Project-Based: The Power of #GIS for Architects, Urban Designers and Planners! 🏙️ Transitioning from architectural design into urban planning, I became an expert in GIS applied to urban and real estate studies. This shift has highlighted the incredible efficiency of working with GIS—or as I call it, working with a system, not project-based. No matter where you are—I've experienced the same in Latin America, the USA, and the UK—we typically analyze sites on a project-by-project basis. However, with GIS, you can perform city-wide analyses, saving time and ensuring that work done is useful for future projects, making the process much more efficient. Unlike traditional methods (like zoning PDFs or flood risk maps), GIS software like QGIS integrates geospatial data for comprehensive, up-to-date city-wide analysis. These layers often cover extensive areas, beneficial for future nearby projects. This approach saves time, ensures consistency, and improves accuracy. That's working with a system, not project-based. If you have any questions, please comment or DM me! #UrbanDesign #UrbanPlanning #QGIS #SpatialData #CityPlanning #DataAnalysis #Geospatial #UrbanDesign

🚨 Case Study: Using Geospatial Data to Assess Multi-Family Housing Potential in Madison, WI 🚨 https://lnkd.in/eKirp-UN We teamed up with Neutral to assess the potential of parcels in Madison, WI, using Vanilla modular architectural system. Neutral’s concept focuses on creating flexible, modular housing solutions that adapt to different sites, making it easier to develop in diverse urban environments. Habidatum's role was to identify the best parcels for this approach using detailed zoning analysis. Project Highlights: ☑️ Zoning & Parcel Analysis: Cleaned up zoning data, identified underused parcels, and mapped transit-oriented development (TOD) zones to find where modular designs could have the most impact. ☑️ Flexible Design Evaluation: Assessed parcel dimensions and potential building footprints to match Neutral’s adaptable modular system to each site. ☑️ Acquisition Strategy: Combined ownership data with area median income (AMI) insights to prioritize properties that align with affordability goals. Results: We delivered tailored GIS data, modular buildable footprints, and a prioritized list of high-potential properties. This project allowed us to refine our expertise in assessing real estate opportunities, bringing fresh insights into the flexible development approach that Neutral is advancing. Stay tuned for more updates! https://lnkd.in/eKirp-UN

🌍 From Course to Community: A Global GIS Network for Urbanists After more than 10 years of teaching, creating an online course was a completely new challenge for me. Partnering with Anastasia Sukhoroslova and All Things Urban made it possible, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. What began as a course for urban professionals has evolved into an international network—with participants from 20+ countries now coming together to reshape cities through data-driven insights. This course is all about practical, impactful skills in GIS for urban planners, designers, and policy-makers. Each module covers the right tools and techniques for GIS work in the urban field, focusing on visualizing, analyzing, and making data-backed decisions that tackle real urban challenges. With the Urban Practitioners’ Guide to QGIS at its core, we’re equipping participants with everything they need to integrate GIS into their work effectively. But this has become more than just a learning experience—it’s a cross-cultural community where urban professionals from diverse backgrounds connect, share ideas, and collaborate. We’re not only building skills but fostering a global network of like-minded urbanists dedicated to creating sustainable, inclusive cities. With limited spots, this is a unique chance to be part of this journey. GIS Modelling for Urban Land Suitability Study I recently had the opportunity to dive deep into urban land suitability analysis with QGIS, and it’s been eye-opening to witness the powerful role GIS plays in aligning location decisions with strategic stakeholder criteria. In this particular exercise, my task was to identify a suitable site for a Communicable Disease Quarantine Center in Gombak—a challenge that required balancing economic, accessibility, and health risk factors. ◼️ Economic Factor: To manage costs, a location was needed on level ground to minimize cut-and-fill expenses often associated with steep slopes. QGIS allows us to easily extract and analyze terrain data to identify areas with minimal slope, ultimately saving potential development costs. ◼️ Accessibility Factor: Proximity to existing service roads and tracks was critical to ensure smooth transportation of materials. ◼️ Health Risk Factor: Protecting public health was paramount, meaning the site had to be distanced from residential areas to reduce potential disease spread. QGIS visualizes population density data and applies buffer zones around populated areas, ensuring sites aligned with health and safety priorities. Every new project with QGIS reinforces the importance of data-driven urban planning that meets stakeholder needs while respecting economic, social, and health considerations. It's a tool that keeps pushing the boundaries of city development. #QGIS #UrbanPlanning #GISAnalysis #LandSuitability #SustainableDevelopment #DataDrivenPlanning #Gombak

4️⃣ Reasons Urban Environment Professionals Should Use #QGIS 🌍 Urban Environment Professionals? 🤔 All of them have a direct / indirect role in the city-making. #architects to #urbandesigners, some specific #socialscientists, #urbanplanners, and #realestate developers... 👇👇👇 1. Comprehensive Site Analysis: QGIS enables you to inspect data, analyze spatial relationships, and make informed decisions based on accurate, up-to-date information. For instance, you can visualize zoning layers simultaneously to efficiently and intelligently understand the information behind them. 2. Access to All Data, Not Just PDFs or JPEGs: Accessing large PDFs containing zoning or maps is inefficient, and sometimes crucial data is only available in geospatial datasets. With QGIS, you can easily manipulate spatial datasets using drag-and-drop functionality, avoiding the need to rely on screenshots. 3. Work with a System, Not Project-Based: Working with datasets in QGIS allows you to effectively manage data. Any previous site analysis, if well organized, can be leveraged for future projects, eliminating the need to start from scratch each time. 4. It's a Skill: Many job postings in architecture, especially for mid to large-scale projects, as well as in urban design and planning, require GIS skills. Developing proficiency in QGIS can open up new opportunities and broaden your professional horizons. #QGIS #UrbanEnvironment #SpatialAnalysis #GeospatialData #UrbanPlanning #CareerDevelopment

The evolution of maps from 2D to 3D has transformed how we understand and interact with geographic information. Traditional 2D maps provided foundational insights, but with advancements in technology, 3D mapping tools like Google Earth, Cesium, MapLibre, and ArcGIS have revolutionized spatial analysis. These tools offer features such as detailed satellite imagery, high-performance rendering, customizable map styles, and advanced spatial analysis capabilities. In the AEC industry, the shift to 3D GIS has enhanced urban planning, infrastructure management, and environmental monitoring, enabling more accurate and dynamic data visualization. This evolution is driving innovation, making geospatial data more accessible and actionable for a wide range of applications. #3DMapping #GIS #AEC #digitalTwin #SpatialAnalysis #TechInnovation Below link gives a fare idea about the features provided by ESRI https://lnkd.in/dBMXvspJ
