I am excited to see the advancements in universal battery charger technology being developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, as reported in the Deccan Herald. During my master's thesis at Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, I had the opportunity to work on a similar topic, focusing on the development of a versatile charging system for electric vehicles. My research involved designing a bidirectional charger capable of operating across a wide voltage range (150V-920V) and addressing compatibility issues between various EV models and existing charging infrastructure. The simulated topologies include a 2-level Voltage Source Converter, a 3-level TNPC, a 3-level NPC in the active front-end, a Dual Active Bridge, and an LLC resonant converter in the DC-DC converter stage. These power converters were simulated with #SiC as well as #GaN devices. It's encouraging to see such innovations that simplify the recharging process and contribute to the efficiency and adoption of electric vehicles. Nano rural innovations have often been overlooked in the agritech ecosystem. 1) Bulbs that act as inverters- uday bhat 2) Movable solar panels on wheels - pradeep Kumar 3) Iot enabled tent which cools produce for farmers- Nikky and Rashmi Jha 4) Water Purifier - Anjan Mukherjee 5)Insect trap - Karibasappa Such is the power of these innovations that often I discover many local variants of these innovations across the villages during my field travels. Recently, during a trip to mirial district, I saw another variant of insect trap that uses the same underlying mechanism. Scaling these innovations would require village innovation guilds that could cross pollinate and spur further innovations. Village level innovation guilds could be a good bridge to connect urban kids with rural innovations and innovators. If a good VLE model could be designed around these, alongside rural libraries ( much like uma mahadevan dasgupta's work in Karnataka), these could become powerful hubs for innovation.
