Hyundai Elevator's initiative to create a D&I Culture in-house drew attention.
Hyundai Elevator announced on May 31 its ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ (D&I) policy to create an organizational culture for diverse talents to acquire creative and innovative thinking. Most global companies, including Disney and Netflix, have regarded D&I as a core value for a long time and formed dedicated organizations.
The main idea of the D&I policy is to prohibit discrimination without reasonable grounds and create a working environment for employees from diverse backgrounds to realize the values of diversity and inclusion.
It aims to provide equal opportunities in employment, promotion, education, wages, and welfare regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, country of origin, cultural background, age, gender identity, differences in political and religious beliefs, or social status of employees.
The policy further includes improvement plans for employees with disabilities. Hyundai Elevator has been expanding jobs for disabled people e.g. signing a ‘Memorandum of understanding on ESG management practice through expansion of employment of the disabled’ with the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities (KEAD) last January.
The company will provide the equipment and materials necessary for employees with disabilities to perform their jobs without limitations and create an optimal working environment based on the policy.
It will further encourage employment policies to give preferential treatment in the hiring process to veterans eligible for state merits and their families, such as national and independence honorees. Additional community contribution activities will include providing education and employment programs for veterans eligible for state merits, supporting their living, and promoting welfare improvements.
Hyundai Elevator has decided to apply the policy to all members of domestic and overseas production and sales arms, subsidiaries, and joint ventures, as well as the headquarters.
The company will not stop at simply establishing policies but build an in-house system for implementing the basic principles. It plans to regularly inspect and upgrade the D&I status and sufficiently share the outcome with stakeholders.
“Elevators are public goods used by an unknown number of people, including senior citizens and people with disabilities. The D&I culture is vital in providing innovative products and services to numerous customers,” remarked Hyundai Elevator Cho Jae-cheon. “We plan to run programs for the D&I culture to settle down throughout the business,” he added.
