This month marks the 17th anniversary of our John Hancock MLK Scholars Program, and we’re excited to welcome another outstanding group of 22 young Boston-area adults into the program. Participants, 16-18 years old, will spend their summer with us tackling meaningful job experiences right here in our corporate offices and in other community-based organizations in the city.    Since its inception in 2008, our MLK Scholars Program has invested more than $16 million to provide 6,000 young adults with meaningful job experiences. One of the primary goals of the program is to level the playing field for young people who don’t have equal access to the work experiences and networks that are key to building long-term skills, self-confidence, and financial empowerment.    The program provides guidance on career readiness and financial literacy to help participants grow as leaders in the office, the classroom, and the greater community. The program also benefits local nonprofit organizations that employ MLK Scholars, providing them with an opportunity to engage Boston’s diverse student population in potential career paths in their industries – with some students even returning as college interns and full-time hires after college.    As we welcome another group of outstanding students this year, I can’t help but think of a quote from our program’s namesake, who once said, “the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”    I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Excited to share the next evolution in our DEI training journey! 🌱 After laying the groundwork with exercises designed to create connections and foster a safe, inclusive environment, we're now delving into developing advanced group processing skills. This shift is pivotal for enhancing how we work together, making our collaborations more effective and equitable. A standout example from our recent sessions is The EQUAL Workshop, an exercise that not only illuminates group dynamics but also offers a practical framework for navigating them. This workshop has been instrumental in teaching us how to: 1. Recognize and Utilize Diverse Strengths: By forming groups with a mix of backgrounds and experiences, we've seen firsthand the value of diversity in problem-solving and creativity. 2. Balance Task and Process: Understanding the importance of what we are doing (task) and how we are doing it (process) has been key in achieving our goals while maintaining a supportive and inclusive team atmosphere. 3. Engage in Reflective Practice: The use of "Our Team Dynamics" worksheets encourages ongoing reflection on our contributions and listening skills, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. 4. Enhance Group Collaboration: Through structured yet creative projects, we're learning to plan, execute, and review our work collectively, appreciating each team member's unique contribution to our shared success. I'm thrilled to announce that I have adapted The EQUAL Workshop specifically for higher education settings. This version is tailored to meet the unique challenges and opportunities within academic environments, supporting faculty, staff, and students in developing the skills necessary for collaborative success in a diverse and inclusive context. As we progress, these group processing skills are not just enhancing our ability to work together; they're also deepening our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We're learning to navigate the complexities of teamwork with an eye towards justice and equality, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued. Stay tuned as we continue to share insights and learnings from our DEI training journey, including the impact of the specialized higher education version of The EQUAL Workshop. Consider this framework by CCL! 🤔 CCL’s research-based ‘R.E.A.L.’ framework provides concrete recommendations for actions that you and your organisation can take. 📈 ✅ R - Reveal Relevant Opportunities → This step is about figuring out where your specific institution is lacking in effective DEI policies. Different initiatives will vary in effectiveness by organisation, based on what actually needs changing. If you’re working on issues that don’t need to be solved, you’re making as much progress as a hamster on a wheel. ✅ E - Elevate Equity → Remember that giving everyone an equal opportunity doesn’t mean giving everyone equal treatment. Just like schools give dyslexic students extra time or reading aids, your organisation might have to consider accommodations based on a multitude of demographic factors. Consider giving your applicants and employees contextually appropriate solutions. ✅ A - Activate Diversity → Make sure you’re actively trying to encourage contribution from many walks of life. Whether that’s from your employees or customer base, engage with these differences *actively* and intentionally to achieve best results. ✅ L - Lead Inclusively → Be intentional about the skills that you’re learning as a leader. If you’re attempting to lead a DEI initiative, improving your own knowledge of the problem will help you tackle it as best you can.
