Today is National Check The Chip Day 🔍 🐾 Pet licencing and microchipping play a crucial role in reuniting lost pets with their families. The American Veterinary Medical Association highlights that 1 in 3 pets will get lost at some point, but unfortunately, only about 60% of microchips are registered. Microchipped pets have a much higher likelihood of being found and returned home, but this is only effective if the information is up-to-date. Today, we encourage all pet owners to Check the Chip—reach out to your local vet and ensure your contact information is accurate. Microchips are an important tool, but they are not a substitute for collars and tags. Keeping all your pet’s identification up to date is the best way to ensure a safe return if they ever get lost. Learn more about Pet Identification, including types, pros and cons of the various types, and common questions in our helpful guide here: https://bit.ly/3WP0rPZ For Edmonton residents, the City of Edmonton Animal Care & Control Centre includes a microchip with a purchase of your cat’s licence. To participate in this program, all you have to do is book an appointment, show proof of ownership and ensure your City of Edmonton cat licence is valid. FAQ: When does a pet become 'old'❓ A: It varies, but cats and small dogs are generally considered geriatric at the age of 7. Larger breed dogs tend to have shorter life spans and are considered geriatric when they are approximately 6 years of age. Geriatric pets should have semi-annual veterinary visits instead of annual visits so signs of illness or other problems can be detected early and treated. Senior pet exams are similar to those for younger pets, but are more in depth, and may include dental care, possible bloodwork, and specific checks for physical signs of diseases that are more likely in older pets. #passingpaws #petcremations #petloss #griefsupport #pets #cats #dogs #petsofperth #supportbeyondtheservice #seniorpets #olderpets #healthypets

Today is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! Here are some tips for carrier traveling next time your furry friend needs to visit the vet.

We know a lot about how to keep cats happy and reduce their stress. So why don’t more cat owners/parents use this information? In one study done in the US, 12% didn’t seek regular veterinary care due to ‘pet stress’ (link in comments). That is a lot of cats. International Cat Care have produced some really beautiful infographics around topics like this. Kudos to them. The image attached to this post is about use of carriers. I would add one thing to this – keep carriers available to cats in the house all the time, with a favorite blanket inside. These become familiar places to sit, with all the right smells. One of our cats still yowls all the way, but he is in a carrier he likes. And sometimes stays sitting in when he gets back. It is all about unstacking those stressors. All these infographics are available free to download on the website (link in comments). Let’s get this information out there! #catwelfare #felinemedicine #petownereducation The views expressed in my posts are my own and do not reflect the views of my employer.
