The first round of grants from Australia’s Economic Accelerator (AEA) are now open for application. These funds will turbocharge collaboration between researchers, universities and industry. A total of $180 million is available for researchers and their industry partners through the AEA Ignite (proof-of-concept) and AEA Innovate (proof-of-scale) grant programs: https://lnkd.in/gS9KXsRN The first round of grants will prioritise projects that align with one or more focus areas: critical and strategic minerals processing; sustainable fuels; digital agriculture; quantum; artificial intelligence (AI); and advanced manufacturing. These focus areas directly contribute towards areas of national priority and will capitalise on important opportunities in areas of Australian economic advantage. https://lnkd.in/gVFagm_V

What is the big picture we are trying to achieve through #netzero ambition and #FutureMadeinAustralia? "To date, Australia has prioritised short-term needs over preparing for our nation’s changing needs. This means that our science and innovation system more closely resembles a patchwork of band-aids, rather than a finely calibrated system that is interconnected, responsive and resilient to change. "This approach has delivered us research and development (R&D) investment across 14 portfolios and approximately 200 programs that operate largely in isolation. And a big slice of the R&D pie –the R&D Tax Incentive – is poorly targeted. Imagine running a business that doesn’t critically examine the effectiveness of an incentive that absorbs 25 per cent ($3.2 billion and growing) of your operating budget. "Any rigorous capability analysis must take a system-wide approach to examine policies, resources and structures across schools, universities, VET, science-based institutions, industry and government. That’s why we are convening stakeholders from a range of disciplines and sectors to evaluate system capability." Excellent commentary from Chennupati Jagadish, AC, President The Australian Academy of Science Australia's Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley Australian Council of Deans of Science via InnovationAus.com

ACDS welcomes the release of Australia’s new National Science Statement and National Research Priorities, and we congratulate Chief Scientist Cathy Foley and Minister Ed Husic MP on their publication. We celebrate that these documents place science at the heart of Australia’s future, recognising science as the centrepiece of our economic, environmental, and cultural wellbeing. These strategies underscore the critical role that science in all its disciplines will play in shaping a prosperous and sustainable Australia. The focus on transitioning to a net zero future, supporting healthy communities, elevating Indigenous knowledge systems, protecting our unique environment, and building a resilient nation aligns with the challenges Australia faces. At ACDS, we know that university science underpins all these policy priorities. We are proud to play a key role in ensuring a robust pipeline of skilled workers and to be at the forefront of innovation. University science – from undergraduate teaching to enabling our most innovative and experienced researchers – needs to be nurtured and cherished. #ACDS #Research #Innovation #FutureMadeInAustralia #STEM https://lnkd.in/gkiAn6sc Australian Government Department of Education Department of Industry, Science and Resources Jason Clare MP Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering The Australian Academy of Science Universities Australia Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) Regional Universities Network The Group of Eight

Really delighted to see £1bn commitment into emerging industries and known, growing strengths of the UK’s University ecosystems. It’s an essential investment into academic resource and therefore development of the core technologies required to solve mass infrastructure problems across #netzero, #security, #infrastructure and #health. Investing in 4,000 world-class researchers with specialisms in AI, robotics, advanced materials/manufacturing, energy, quantum, techbio, cyber, signal processing/comms and simulation technologies is essential if the UK wants to maintain pace with the deepTech friendly ecosystems of the US and EU. It’s refreshing to see programs backed in regions that don’t necessarily align with their deemed sector expertise clusters - broadening accessibility and room for collaboration. The Centre for Doctoral Training I was fortunate to be a part of in University of Leeds was designed to focus on translation and commercialisation of next-gen health technologies. I hope this ethos is echoed in this next wave of funding the 65 new #CDTs to not only produce world-leading research, but also world-leading entrepreneurs and businesses that can truly have global impact. Huge congrats to all the academic leaders that secured funding. #emergingtechnologies #UKspinouts #deepTech

The UK's approach to funding scientific research is under scrutiny as Sir John Bell emphasises the need for strategic prioritisation of public funds into key research areas. This call for strategic allocation of resources coincides with the government's ambition to establish the UK as a "science superpower" by 2030. However, this strategic shift may face potential challenges in identifying crucial research areas and ensuring adequate resource allocation. The upcoming change in leadership at UKRI presents opportunities for corporate leaders to drive effective resource allocation in the scientific research landscape, potentially shaping the future of scientific research funding and innovation in the UK. How do you think these potential challenges can be effectively addressed to achieve the goal of making the UK a "science superpower" by 2030? I'd love to hear your comments. #lifesciences #researchfunding

Can #money buy #scientific #leadership? Intriguing question! In their highly interesting Research Policy study, Nicolas Carayol and François Maublanc try to answer this question. Specifically, they look at the #excellence programs introduced by the German and French governments. In a nutshell, those programs aimed to: -promote cutting-edge #research -create good conditions for young #scholars -deepen interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and international #collaborations -enhance the international appeal of excellent German and French universities So what are the effects? The overall effects on scientific outcomes are positive: 1M € in excellence policy leads to 22.5 more #scientificarticles (i.e., a paper costs less than 50k €): 19 are international, 2.5 are with industry; 3.7 are top 10% cited #papers, and .6 are top 1% cited papers. Hence, the scientific impact does not relate to top cited papers but to international and industry cooperations. Moreover, the excellence research policy essentially helped the supported universities maintaining their scientific competitive edge. Study link in the first comment. Rüdiger Hahn Michael Haenlein
