October 21-25th is National School Bus Safety Week. School buses transport more than 20 million students each day and are one of the safest modes of transportation for students. However, illegal bus passing poses a significant threat to children and others on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were nearly a thousand fatal school bus accidents between 2013 and 2022, with most accidents occurring when children are getting on or off the bus. With daylight saving time ending and darker days ahead, it's crucial to stay alert around school buses. Below are safety tips for both drivers and parents of children riding school buses: 1. Stop at least 10 feet from a bus with its stop-arm extended. 2. Slow down for yellow flashing lights; stop for red lights. 3. Slow down and watch for kids near a bus stop. 4. Ensure kids arrive early to the bus stop and wait 10 feet from the curb. 5. Children should always cross in front of the bus, making eye contact with the driver. Let's work together to keep our kids safe. While this week is recognized as School Bus Safety Week, every week should be School Bus Safety Week. Here are a few reminders: Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop when a school bus’s yellow lights are flashing. Drivers MUST come to a full stop and wait when a bus’s red lights are flashing and its stop-arm is extended. It is illegal to speed up and pass a bus as it slows to a stop with its yellow lights flashing or is stopped with its red lights flashing. Drivers may proceed only after the bus’s lights have stopped flashing and the bus has begun moving again. Even when a bus doesn’t have flashing lights, drivers should exercise caution for children who may be crossing unexpectedly. #delawaressafetycouncil #safety #schoolbussafety #schoolbussafetyweek
