Some key insights from our discussion yesterday on the role of Energy Planning in attracting financing for the energy transition, with colleagues from IRENA, BNDES, AIIB, and the Bank of Ethiopia, include: - Aligning energy and power systems planning with long-term decarbonization strategies is fundamental. A long-term vision is essential. - Energy plans must be credible and realistic, addressing key uncertainties and risks. For instance, plans that neglect the actual permitting times required for generation and transmission projects can cause more issues than they resolve. - Attracting financing requires not only robust and credible energy plans but also stable regulatory frameworks that ensure reliable income streams. In other words, effective planning and regulation are necessary to support a long-term vision and attract financing. - As the economy shifts towards electrification and decarbonization, power systems planning needs to broaden its scope. With increasing electricity demand from various sectors, multi-energy-carrier planning, or economy-wide planning for energy resources, should become the standard. The South African government's post-2015 National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEEDS) has several objectives, including: - Economic growth: Promote energy efficiency as a driver for balanced, sustainable economic growth - Job creation: Boost job creation - Technological innovation: Lead technological innovation - Energy security: Improve energy security by making better use of existing and new generation capacity - Environmental sustainability: Optimize resources to safeguard environmental sustainability - Competitiveness: Improve competitiveness by supporting users to reduce their energy intensity - Inclusive economic growth: Stimulate inclusive economic growth by releasing generation capacity to all citizens - Public buildings: Accelerate the rate of improvement in energy consumption per square meter in public sector buildings As the The Southern African Energy Efficiency Confederation (SAEEC) this document affirms the centrality of Energy Efficiency to South Africa's future. It has to be seen as one of the key pillars of a Just Energy Transition. This is an objective we continuously work towards with our members, partners and government.

Understanding the #EACEnergyMarketUnion The dimensions of the EAC Energy Union are summarised as 1). energy security, affordability, and efficiency; providing reliable energy at affordable cost and in an efficient manner to spur economic growth in the region. 2). Fully integrated energy market that is competitive; a market that allows efficient market participation and free access to adequate interconnections as well as allows renewable integration into the systems. It also provides for strategic investment in rural areas where the main grid may not be economically feasible in the short term. It also envisages the introduction of robust wholesale energy markets and a dynamic spot market to increase competition in both supply and distribution 3). Just Energy Transition: in which the region aims at strategic investment in all available energy sources to ensure energy security while taking into consideration decarbonising the economies. 4). Sustainable Capacity Building and research: the region is looking into providing innovative models for energy efficiency and technologies as well as providing tailor-made training through its Energy Regulation Centre of Excellence. The robust design of the energy market will determine the speed and effectiveness of the EAC Energy Union.
