I joined Razorpay 5+ years back. If I had to pick one PM skill that has defined how I build things is - truly understanding tech. To those thinking why product & marketing teams need to understand tech - here’s why 👇 Imagine - you’re in a board room with your engineering team for quarterly planning. You’ve come up with a nice long roadmap. As you get into the meeting, engineering starts knocking off items from the roadmap, one after one. Their timelines don’t make sense, reasons given are complex & most things they say sound gibberish to you. Trust me, I’ve been there. Learning about tech feels like a rabbit hole. There are a zillion technologies. There’s the client side, the server side & before you learn two, twenty more pop up. And, there is a misconception that you need to learn technologies to learn tech - no you don’t. What you really need to learn is this — Learn to understand any tech stack work with your engineering efficiently. Learn to make proactive tradeoffs in your product build decisions by not just participating but leading discussions with your tech team. Learn to speak the language of tech. And finally, use all of it to ship better & faster products. For almost a decade, I’ve built complex tech products like Razorpay & been on both sides of the table first as a engineer & then as growth & platform PM. After spending a phenomenal 7 years at Razorpay, I have embarked on a new journey with Zivy. Last month, the 8th was my last day at Razorpay. It was a remarkable journey - I joined as an amateur software engineer, eager to work in a product company and knowing nothing about fintech. I never imagined my journey would be so incredible or that I'd grow so much professionally. Working at Razorpay has taught me countless valuable lessons, but the most profound was discovering the transformative power of building new products. When an engineer builds something new, they not only create value in terms of money and ESOPs for themselves but collectively contribute to a legacy that might endure for hundreds of years. My time at Razorpay has been extraordinary - from drafting countless technical documents and writing thousands of lines of code to building lasting friendships and creating unforgettable memories. As I wrote in my farewell email, Razorpay is like a university - it teaches you invaluable lessons in the most engaging way possible. While Shashank and Harshil deserve immense credit for creating such an exceptional organization, I can't imagine my journey without the remarkable mentors who shaped it. I've been fortunate to learn from many outstanding individuals: prashanth pamidi , Pranav Sir & Aseem guided my early steps; Badri Vasudevan, our in-house Warren Buffett; Varun Achar, the epitome of a full-stack manager; Ever helping Akhil Agrawal & Monojit Banerjee; Kamlesh, who revolutionized our frontend hiring process; the ever-composed Ashutosh; and the omnipresent Kuldeepak & Rizwanul. Product management took on new meaning through Prasun, Siddharth & Ashima. The leadership team - Prashanth, Sarath and Murali - offered masterclasses simply through their presence, while casual conversations with Giridharan, Abinash and Venkatesan (VV) never failed to provide valuable insights. While I have only mentioned my mentors, how can I forget all the incredible teammates & fellow engineers I worked with daily - from countless chai/sutta/ breaks and debugging sessions to late-night deployments and parties 🍻 I am joining Zivy, a startup by two amazing Razorpay alumni, Prashanth YV and Vivek Karna. A while ago, I came across an interesting interview from Razorpay PM Director. He shared how every product idea in their team goes through a process that’s a lot like #SharkTank. It’s really a very interesting way to think: Innovation isn’t just about having a cool idea—it’s about making sure that idea solves a real problem. The most successful products aren’t born from trends; they come from tough questions, deep analysis and a market gap.
