How can investors unleash the power of nature-based climate solutions? According Laura García Vélez, Nature Specialist, LOIM, “nature-based solutions are the most cost-effective approach to addressing biodiversity loss and desertification.” Yet if we are to meet climate targets, annual nature-based investments “must increase nearly fourfold.” Speaking at the start of COP29 Azerbaijan – the UN’s annual Climate Change Conference taking place this year in Baku, Azerbaijan – they took a look at the landmark agreements reached at the recent COP16 ‘Biodiversity COP’, and explored how those gathered in Baku could unlock the financing needed to bring nature-based solutions to scale. In a few days, the next annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) will start 🌀 This event is unique. That's why we outlined the steps that we consider to be priorities on the way to strengthening climate policy in Ukraine and the world. Among the main offers are: ◾ development of a decision regarding responsibility for emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from international armed conflicts and wars; ◾ complete abandonment of fossil fuels, with the determination of specific time intervals for this; ◾ expansion of the Loss and Damage Fund and implementation of the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) to ensure adequate climate funding; ◾ further alignment of climate goals with biodiversity conservation goals. Details about these and other decisions that must be taken at the international and national levels to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement can be found in the Position of the UCN before the COP29: https://lnkd.in/diFezPv3 📋

💥 The symbiotic relationship between conflict and climate can not go undiscussed at the next #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan this upcoming November. On one hand, climate change is increasing food insecurity, water scarcity, and resource competition while disrupting livelihoods and catalyzing migration in conflict-affected states. On the other, conflicts damage the environment, leading to water, soil and land contamination, the release of pollutants in the air, or the destruction of large areas of forest or arable land. Tackling climate change effectively and sustainably is not possible without addressing conflict dynamics. 🚨 🌱 That’s why we, as part of the Peace@COP collective, have put together a policy paper providing recommendations for involving peace in #ClimateAction negotiations. This year’s #COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan—home to the historical birthplace of oil extraction. As global leaders focus on fossil fuels and their role in climate change, what does this location mean for fossil fuels—and forests? Azerbaijan has invested in renewable energy and established a Climate Finance Action fund to support climate resilience in developing countries. But the country also faces the reality of climate impacts such as extreme weather, rising seas, and biodiversity loss. This #ForestsNews story explores the region’s role in shaping the future of climate action and how nature-based solutions can support adaptation and resilience.
