What a great week to be in Human Resources! On this #HRThursday I’m filled with inspiration from both the SHRM conference and our Human Resource Professionals of Central PA Chapter volunteerism event. This year I opted to attend the SHRM Conference online, traveling to Chicago just wasn’t in the cards. Al Roker kicked off sharing that he never planned to be on TV, but when the opportunity came, he went for it. In his words “Don’t follow your dreams, follow your opportunities.” As I reflect on my career, this really resonated. I’ve built a career by saying yes to opportunities, even when it scared me. But I’ll be honest, when I was a teenager, I didn’t dream of a life in HR. But here I am, loving it! Roker and our fearless leader Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP both spoke to incivility, the negativity in the world around us bleeds into the workplace, so we can not ignore it. Between a political year, social media and a 24 hour news cycle, it seems that everyone is looking for a “gotcha” moment. To combat this, Roker shared that we should look for “how are you” moments. I also enjoyed Jack Gottlieb presentating “The Future of HR is not HR” where he provided a framework to talk with our CEOs about our marketplace, customers, organization and people. When was the last time you asked your CEO, “What are the biggest problems we need to solve?”. And he encouraged participants to write down an answer to the question, “What is the #1 action you must take over the next 30 days?” While watching Johnny on camera isn’t the same as being live in front of him, I was still inspired to run into the storm of changes he described: - The next 10 years, 1 billion jobs will be affected by technology - The fastest growing segment of the workplace is 70 or older - 1 in 5 Gen Z candidates brought a parent to the job interview - 100,000 humanoid robots will be deployed in the human world in the next 5 years - If HR isn’t clear on what Diversity & Inclusion is, no wonder it’s under attack By attending online, I was able to join my local SHRM Chapter for a volunteerism & networking event. It was refreshing to spend time with local HR professionals and support the Midwest Food Bank. They move 100,000 lbs of food each month. And I’ve never had to go to bed with an empty stomach. It was equally rewarding to share food & drink with these talent #HRProfessionals after our volunteerism was complete. We shared stories about where we grew up, our families, hobbies, what we are watching on Netflix. There will be time to talk HR, but last night was about connection. The message is clear: Let's reconnect with each other and charge into the storm like buffalos. Our employees and organizations need #HR now more than ever! https://lnkd.in/ek_A7zR9 #HRProfessionals #Leadership #CommunityService #WorkplaceCulture #FutureOfWork #hrcommunity #hrcareers #hrlife
Sara J. Kennedy thank you for coming to my session and glad it had such an impact. That is excellent that you had this event in parallel with the Midwest Food Bank.
All I saw was “1 in 5 Gen Z candidates brought a parent to the job interview.” WOW! What are we supposed to do about that?!
