We believe the best way to protect nature is to make its value clear to the financial system. If we can bring nature onto the balance sheet with data that demonstrates its value, that makes it an asset, then that asset will be valued and protected. With that thesis in mind, we're excited to announce our investment in Meridia, alongside ICE, Regeneration.VC, SAGANA, Edaphon, Cerigo Investments, and Cecile Sother's Sabi Fund, a €5.2M Series A. Meridia's Verify platform is trained on the land title data of the majority of the world's cocoa and coffee, enabling customers such as Cargill, Unilever, Barry Callebaut Group, and many more to gain transparency on the origin of their commodity supply chains. This lets them reduce and eliminate deforestation due to european demand, fulfilling their obligations under the EUDR, while placing a value on the nature and ecosystem services they rely on to deliver chocolate, coffee, and other commodities to customers. Great analysis on the ROI for government investment in primary sector innovation, through the SFFF program. 16x return over 30 years isn't exactly VC-type payback, but that's exactly the point. Private investment typically won't have the patience for these kinds of innovations to mature and deliver returns. That's the role of government, and this program is a great example of public investment in long-term priorities. Additionally, the government has invested in more than monetary returns - it's there in the "S" of the SFFF - this portfolio is about delivering sustainability outcomes, and transforming the primary sector for the better.

Key Details:  ·      Funding: EUR 50,000 to EUR 123,000  ·      Duration: Max. 18 months (extensions possible if milestones are reached)  ·      Target Audience: Companies based in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, UK, and non-profits; companies in OECD DAC countries  ·      Co-funding: 25% to 100%, based on company size  ·      Application process: The Short Proposal must be submitted by December 20, 2024 for projects to begin in summer 2025. After two succesful calls with 13 funded projects, we’re extremely happy to see Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) continuing to support the sector by enabling the Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative (SASI) to offer this fund. Our insights thus far show 3 key learnings: 1) "well begun is half done": a good project starts with a robust risk assessment of your supply chain, as it informs your project design and helps to anticipate challences! 2) "none of us is as smart as all of us": engaging and collaborating with your supply chain partners is a prerequisite for success - and it enhances ownership! 3) "slow and steady wins the race": take your time, build trust and plan to make adjustments!
