Is Jaguar the new... Tiffany & Co.? All of this Jaguar talk looks very familiar... A controversial rebrand & campaign... alienating their current customer... It's starting to look like Tiffany ~4 years ago. 💎💎💎 In 2021, Tiffany launched the “Not Your Mother” campaign, aiming to attract younger consumers. The campaign featured a series of younger models in jeans/basic tees with revamped Tiffany jewelry alongside the slogan “Not Your Mothers Tiffany.” And at the time, the campaign faced seriously backlash. (Like... this level of LinkedIn/Reddit craziness backlash) It’s a bold move to put down your current customer to appeal to a new one, but it got one thing the brand had been missing: *Attention* They then brought in new creative direction, a redesigned store model, AND celebrity partners to freshen up the brand. And it's paid dividends for them... So, before we overthink this Jaguar rebrand, let's see if they're really taking a page from the LVMH / Tiffany playbook... Clearly, Jaguar felt like their current strategy either wasn't working or wasn't going to work in the long run. And it's most likely that they were starting to lose their customers to the Teslas & Rivians of the world. So now the question is... Will it work? What Tiffany, Deadpool, and a White Cotton Blouse have in common. There is a conversation that we keep having with clients and it goes something like this: simplicity matters more when you are competing with the world of the phone rather than that of the shelf. With the overwhelming proliferation of really everything online, being memorable and recognisable necessitates simplicity. New guard brands have an advantage, having been designed to compete in this era; with tightly logical portfolios, instantly recognisable packaging and cohesive brand worlds. Legacy brands have a harder time, reconciling sprawling portfolios with sub-brands that dilute cohesion. Vogue Business recently did a piece on what they deemed the ‘White Cotton Blouse Index’ - a brief investigation into the quantity of choice among luxury retailers, measured by how many iterations of the classic white cotton shirt were on offer. They found that those with the highest number of choices (Farfetch - with over 1100 shirts) were the ones struggling with performance issues, while those with the most curated options were in a stronger business position. Drawing on Barry Schwartz’s classic Ted Talk from 2006 - ‘The Paradox of Choice’, Vogue makes the point that when presented with too much choice, we become paralyzed into inaction. What stands out these days is knowable signs and symbols that stick. Brat and its lurid green. Barbie pink; Heinz ketchup and mustard x Deadpool and Wolverine. Simple icons that represent broader ideas. It is the simplicity of these icons - from Nike to Tiffany - that mark the foundations of coherent and compelling brand worlds. When I am in Los Angeles I always make it a point to go to Rodeo Drive and talk to customers, store managers and sales associates to get a reality check. Traffic is definitely down, according to managers and sales associates. I saw lots of empty stores on a Saturday, and not so many bags in the hands of shoppers. This time I heard a great deal of uncertainty about the present and future from store staffs. The uncertainty has several factors:  1-While the UHNW and HNW are still buying, there seems to be a lack of excitement about current collections. And even the wealthiest are unhappy about prices. 2-At some major brands there is staff uncertainty about the viability of relatively new, unproven Creative Directors, and their ability to be good stewards of the brand. 3-There is uncertainty about departing Creative incumbents and their replacements. Associates wonder how HNW and UHNW SuperClients will react. 4-Obviously there is uncertainty about the economy and whether it turns up or down next few months. What will the holidays and 2025 bring? Fashion, by its very nature carries a great deal of uncertainty, but this is a time where there is much more sense of fragility, fear, and concern from associates than I have heard since Covid. If you want to master true luxury expertise, not just punditry or academic expertise, go out into the field and spend quality time with customers and associates. We spend most of our days living with, and interviewing HNWs and UHNWs, and speaking with front-line teams across multiple luxury categories.
