Thank you LBB (Little Black Book) for asking our MD Claire Lambell to comment on the latest IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Bellwether Report:   "Cautious optimism still seems to be the name of the game. It’s encouraging to see confidence returning to the market, with total marketing budgets seeing the second-strongest upturn since Q2 2022. Some positive news on inflation will help consumer pockets, and a summer of sport gives us all something to look forward to, but we’re also well aware of wider geopolitical uncertainties which seem to be constantly on the horizon. We’re certainly advising clients to hold their nerve.   I am concerned that there seems to be a tendency towards short term, tactical / promotional spend, but I’m not surprised to see many observations in the comments section around AI. We’re big believers in building brands over the long term, be that through distinctive brand assets, finding meaningful difference or shaping culture through communities. Creativity is our superpower, and as the world of AI continues to knock at the door, creating future demand for our clients through authenticity and originality will be the only way to combat the sea of sameness, like a tidal wave, that is inevitably heading towards us. How much of your creative is actually effective? We recently undertook a mini study for an event across 5 brands in different sectors: CPG, tech, luxury, automotive & entertainment - derived from their latest digital creative and it made for grim reading. 5.8/10 is the average DAIVID #CreativeEffectiveness score - derived from attention, positive emotions and brand recall - the key drivers of desired brand outcomes. Only 16% scored that or above. The 'Good' Another 60% of the ads tested, the 'Bad' scored 5.8>4.5. 24% - nearly a quarter fell into the 'Ugly', below 4.5 with negative emotions showing so prevalently that they could be actively damaging the brands. We have a larger macro study coming this quarter and a lot more detail but if you want be more Clint Eastwood and less Eli Wallach, hit us up to stay good.

Including pictures of the impressive shortbread structure, the coverage on Mail Online highlighted how the family-owned business has been sharing the joy of shortbread with Americans for almost 50 years. This afternoon, we hosted a Zoom session on 'Creative team set-up', which provided great insight from some leading consumer CMOs from the UK and the US. Here are the Top 10 takeaways: 💡 Having a senior creative lead like a Creative Director is crucial for guiding the team's strategic thinking and ensuring brand consistency across different channels and campaigns. 💡 Finding the right balance between brand consistency and performance-driven creative is an ongoing challenge. Brand guardianship processes can help align the brand and performance teams. 💡 Giving brand and performance teams access to shared data and analytics can help both sides understand what's working and why, fostering better collaboration. 💡 For multi-brand organizations, structuring creative teams around target audiences or brand revenue size can work better than separating strictly by brand. 💡 Utilizing external creative agencies or consultants, especially for high-velocity performance creative, can complement in-house teams and introduce fresh perspectives. 💡 Letting creative team members specialize in areas they excel at (e.g., video, illustration) while still exposing them to varied projects can be beneficial. 💡 Collaboration between brand and performance teams when onboarding external agencies helps ensure creative aligns with brand guidelines. 💡 For performance creative, the initial "hook" may sacrifice brand aesthetics but could drive better metrics; the landing page experience allows more brand storytelling. 💡 Working closely with influencers and micro-influencers can introduce authentic perspectives while mitigating cannibalization concerns. 💡 Differentiating between true "campaigns" requiring big ideas and seasonal/evergreen creative directions can help teams focus their efforts.
