6 things I wish I knew in my first year as a freelancer: 1. Accept every job offered to you. You need experience, feedback, a client base, and testimonials. Also you need to understand the day-to-day life of a freelancer. 2. Don’t waste time copying others. Proceed at your own pace, embrace failure, and create a roadmap of what not to do. No one knows the intricacies of your journey, so there's no need to fear judgment. 3. If you can't succinctly explain what you do in one or two sentences, you need to refine your expertise and clarify your focus. 4. It will become increasingly challenging. With more clients comes greater responsibility. 5. Always ensure you are actively pitching and acquiring clients. Avoid relying solely on one or two major clients. 6. Regardless of your level of success, there is always something to learn from others. Never stop learning. Share these insights with your fellow freelancers and entrepreneurs.

Everyone knows that starting a business isn't for the faint of heart. And if you'd asked me five years ago if I'd be working for myself, I probably would have laughed in your face. So what changed? I felt stuck. I wasn't a PhD so I didn't "belong" in academia. (Despite having over ten years of experience and two Masters degrees). So I decided to pivot. But it was HARD. I was a scientist! I didn't know anything about starting a business. I felt like I was winging it for the first year. And even though I made it work, things got so much easier when I asked for help. I think it's really easy to get into an independent groove as a freelancer and small business owner. We typically work alone and feel we need to do things alone. We forget that there are loads of others going through the same thing. That is my biggest lesson- you don't have to do it alone. Connect to your local small business organization for support, join a community of fellow freelancers, and ask your community for referrals. It's the best way to not only start a business but also run a business. Just because we chose the harder, solo path doesn't mean we're destined to do alone.
