How do you measure the size of a cloud? One way you can measure one is cloud cover, expressed in their own unit, the okta ◯ (not Okta!). An okta is a circle divided into eight parts, each part representing how many eighths of the sky is covered by clouds. Imagine dividing the sky above you into eighth pieces; one okta ◯ equals one-eighth covered, and eight oktas ⬤ means completely overcast. We don't use the okta much today, but some aviation forecast reports list them for pilots. The picture below shows how it would appear in print. We'll talk later this week about how we can measure the size of a computer cloud, but if you ever want to impress someone with a cloud fact, just tell them it's a three okta ◔ day! #cloud #serverandsky #okta
